JIPMER WEB SITE IN HINDI

The Hindi version of Web site of JIPMER (www.jipmer.edu) was inaugurated on 6.8.2003 by Smt. Kusum Veer, Director, Hindi Teaching Scheme, Department of Official Language, New Delhi in the presence of Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao, Director, JIPMER. In this website, the information regarding JIPMER is available in Hindi. As per the Annual Programme issued by the Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Department of Official Language, preparation of bilingual web site is one of the targets for the year 2003-2004. This year, JIPMER fulfilled the target and this can be considered as an achievement in the implementation of Official Language in JIPMER.

TELE EDUCATION ON "RESEARCH METHODS"

On 12th August 2003, a tele-conference between JIPMER and the TamilNadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai was held at NTTC Seminar Hall to enable the post-graduate students of that University to participate in the Ethics workshop conducted for JIPMER post-graduates. Dr. Nalini, Head, Department of Curriculum Development of that University and Dr. Ragunanthanan, Assistant Professor of Medicine & Medical education unit of Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai, moderated the session from the Chennai end. The Faculty of Ethics Core group of P.G. Orientation Programme conducted the session at the JIPMER end. The interaction was lively and kept up attention of participants on both ends. The feed back from Chennai end was highly encouraging. They requested to conduct more such tele-education programmes between JIPMER and the University. Better connectivity is required to undertake regular programmes.

ICMR-WHO WORKSHOP

A workshop sponsored by ICMR-WHO on "Competence building in writing up the proposals and seeking grants from national and international agencies" was organized by the Department of Medical Education and held at Library Seminar Hall from 29th – 31st July 2003. Dr. R Sambasiva Rao, Director, JIPMER inaugurated the session. Dr. S. Ramakrishnan, former Head of the Department of Biochemistry, JIPMER was the Chief Guest and he gave the key note address on "Frontiers of Ophthalmic Research in India". ICMR was represented by Dr. S.C. Sehgal, Deputy Director (International Health Division, ICMR), Dr. P.K. Das, Director, Vector Control Research Centre (VCRC), Pondicherry and Deputy Directors (VCRC) Dr. R. Ravi and Dr. S.P. Pani. Dr. P.R. Narayanan from Tuberculosis Research Centre (TRC), Chennai also took part in the workshop. Dr. Cherian Varghese, National Professional Officer, represented the World Health Organisation (WHO). Professor K.R. Sethuraman, Head of Medical Education coordinated the whole workshop. The workshop was a mix of didactic sessions and highly interactive ones, which were appreciated by the participants who were 24 in number from all over South India, Andaman and Nicobar islands. On the last day, each participant presented individual projects for possible review and submission for project funding by various agencies. The workshop ended with the valedictory function. Dr. S. Chandrashekar, former Director, JIPMER was the Chief Guest. He highlighted the importance of research in the Indian context.

P.G. ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

The Department of Medical Education (NTTC), JIPMER conducted the Post-graduate Orientation Programme for first year Post-graduates on Research, Ethics and Communication Skills for the 10th year from 7th to 14th August 2003 at NTTC Seminar Hall.

On 8th August, Dr. Santosh Kumar and Dr. B.C. Koner introduced the Post-graduates to the "Art and Science of Journal Club Presentations". On 11th, every post-graduate student presented an article each and got feedback using micro teaching techniques. This session was conducted simultaneously in nine different halls by all the post-graduate training departments. On 12th, there was a session on ‘Medical Ethics’ moderated by Dr. K.R. Sethuraman with expert comments from Dr. S. Srinivasan, Dr. S. Jagdish and Dr. S. Soundara-raghavan.

On 13th, Dr. K.A. Narayan moderated a symposium on ‘Research Methodology. Dr. R.P. Swaminathan, Dr. S. Mahadevan, Dr. B. Gitanjali and Dr. R. Raveendran took part in the symposium. The post-graduates were then divided into groups and given over-night group work on research plan. For the simulated experience, there was an active participation.

It was note worthy that the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University had deputed Dr. Ragunanthanan, Assistant Professor of Medicine and Medical Education Unit, Kilpauk Medical College, Chennai as an observer for the orientation programme. The feedback was highly encouraging and there was unanimous opinion among post-graduates that the programme should be conducted in future also.

JIPMER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

The first monthly meeting of the session 2003-2004 was held on 25th August 2003, Monday at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. This was attended by 103 members of the society.

The meeting was chaired by President of JSS, Dr. T.K. Dutta, Professor of Medicine. The programme began with Dr. Dutta welcoming the members. This was followed by the address of the Director of JIPMER Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao to the members of JSS. He invited the members to actively participate in the JSS meetings. He also pointed out that members should present their research works in JSS meetings before presenting their papers in national and international conferences or sending the papers for publication. His address was very encouraging for the members. Dr. Rao then presented a paper on "Gaps in Tetanus Vaccination", which generated a lot of interest in the audience. This was followed by an extensive discussion amongst the various members on the probable prophylactic and immunity enhancing steps that can be implemented in JIPMER for the prevention of Tetanus. It is worth mentioning here that this was for the first time in the history of JIPMER that the Director of the institute presented a paper in the JSS monthly meeting. This talk was followed by a paper presentation by Dr. Rajasekhar Varma on "Dobutamine Stress Echocardiography: initial experience in JIPMER", on behalf of the department of Cardiology, JIPMER. The presentation and the echocardiographic visuals were well appreciated by the audience. The President presented an honorary scroll to the Director and certificates to Dr. Varma and his co-authors. The meeting ended with the vote of thanks by the Secretary, Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Professor of Physiology.

JIPMER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEET

The Annual meet of the JIPMER Alumni Association was held on 2nd and 3rd August 2003 at JIPMER. The Scientific program took place on 2nd August in Theatre Pasteur from 10 am to 1pm. The Director, JIPMER, Dr R Sambasiva Rao, inaugurated the meet. There were 2 scientific sessions. The first session was chaired by Dr. Vanaja Sankaran, retired Professor & Head of Pathology, JIPMER. The papers presented were:

1. Comorbidity factors in head and neck cancers by Dr Vinidh Paleri (Batch of 1985).

2. Take a walk through the nose- Nasoendoscopy in ENT practice by Dr. T.L. Vasudevan (Batch of 1976).

The second session was chaired by Dr. Samir Mitra, retired Professor & Head of Anatomy, JIPMER. The papers presented were:

1. Recent developments in medical oncology by Dr. Ramasamy Madiajagane (Batch of 1978).

2. Urinary stress incontinence by Dr. S. Vasudevan (Batch of 1978).

3. Valvuloplasties- the JIPMER experience by Dr. J. Balachander (Batch of 1969).

The General body meeting was held in the Community Hall, JIPMER on 3rd August. Elections for the various posts of the association were held. The following are the new office bearers of the association:

STAFF NEWS

Department of Surgery

1. Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan, Director-Professor & Head and Dr. Vishnu Prasad N.R., Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery attended the 7th Biennial Congress of Asian Society of Hepato-Biliary Pancreatic Surgery held at Chennai from 28th to 31st August, 2003. Dr. N. Ananthakrishanan delivered a Guest Lecture on "Amoebic Liver Abscess - Current perspectives". He also chaired a session on Pancreatic Surgery.

2. Dr. Vikram Kate, Professor of Surgery delivered an invited guest lecture on ‘Infection and Antibiotics – A Surgeon’s Perspective’ in the Scientific Society of Mahatma Gandhi Dental College and Hospital, Pondicherry on 28th August, 2003.

Department of Emergency Medical Services

Dr. A. Tumbanatham CMO (NFSG) & Officer in charge of EMS department participated in "Early Management of Trauma Course" (EMTC) in Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore from 31st July – 2nd August, 2003. The course was conducted by Dept of Accident and Emergency medicine of CMC Hospital, Vellore.

This course has been envisaged to train first responders of trauma cases in emergency regarding the appropriate and aggressive management in the golden hour (1st hour following injury). The module included hands on training on various aspects of management and with many scenarios.

At the end of the course, the participants were evaluated through theory and practical exams. Only those who obtained more than 85% individually in theory and practical were given the EMTC certificate. Dr. A. Tumba-natham cleared the exam and obtained the certificate.

Department of Microbiology

Dr. S.C. Parija, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology delivered a Guest Lecture on ‘Laboratory diagnosis of Lymphatic filariasis’ during the VII Annual National Conference of Lymphology Society of India at Rajah Muthiah Medical College, Annamalai University, Annamalai Nagar on 27.7.2003.

Department of Medical Education (NTTC)

Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor & Head of the Department of Medical Education was invited as a representative of Ministry of Health (D.G.H.S.) to attend an expert group meeting on ‘Standardisation of digital information to facilitate telemedicine’ on 5.8.2003 at New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by the Secretary, Dept. of Information Technology (IT), Ministry of Communications & Information Technology. Officials of the I.S.R.O., M.C.I., I.C.M.R. and Department of I.T., professionals from Health Ministry as well as from the corporate health sector attended the meeting. The draft guideline titled ‘Standardisation of digital information to facilitate telemedine’ was presented and discussed in depth.

As a follow up activity, I.S.R.O. and C-DAC are likely to help connect JIPMER with Maldives Health Service for providing tele-medicine and tele-CME service for that SAARC country.

Department of TB & CD

Dr. R. Venkateswara Babu, Junior Resident (II Year P.G.) Department of TB & CD, attended the conference ‘CHEST MEET 2003’ on New Vistas in Pulmonary Medicine conducted at Hotel Park Sheraton, Chennai from 18th 20th July 2003.
