WORKSHOP ON HIV TESTING

A three days workshop on "External Quality Assessment Schemes (EQAS)" for Medical officers and technicians from 5-7th March 2003 was held in the Department of Microbiology, JIPMER, Pondicherry in collaboration with State Aids Control Society, Pondicherry. Dr. S.C. Parija, Professor and Head, Dept. of Microbiology was the course coordinator.

The objective of the workshop was to have a reorientation programme for Medical officers and Technicians of Blood bank Services in Union Territory of Pondicherry regarding various aspects of HIV infection. This was achieved through a series of lectures delivered by faculty members of JIPMER drawn from various specialties like Microbiology, Medicine, Paediatrics, Dermatology, Preventive and Social Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. A practical demonstration and hands-on-training in ELISA and immunocomb techniques for antibody detection was also given. The participants were given coded serum samples as part of EQAS, which were to be tested in their respective laboratories.

The list of participants included Medical officers and Technicians from the Union Territory of Pondicherry i.e. Voluntary Counselling & Testing Centre and Blood bank of JIPMER, General Hospital, Pondicherry, STD Control Programme, Pondicherry, Blood bank Karaikal and Mahe.

INTERACTIVE SESSION ON MOLECULAR BIOLOGY

Dr. K. Satyamoorthy, Professor and Head of Biotechnology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal was invited as visiting Professor to the Department of Pharmacology. He conducted a 3-day interactive session on Molecular biology from 17th–19th March 2003 at JIPMER. The first day session comprised of different types of blotting which included methods for performing Northern and Southern blotting techniques, genetic suppressor elements in melanoma, DNA extraction and sequencing methods and the designing of primers for PCR using databases primarily the NCBI website.

On the second day Dr. Satyamoorthy spoke about different methods of identification of mutations by using different methods like SSCP-single strand conformational polymorphism; DGGE- denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis, and other PCR based methods. He subsequently gave a seminar on proteomics and micro arrays. On the same day afternoon, he gave a lecture on quantitative PCR followed by PCR clinics in which common problems while doing PCR were discussed. On the third day, he did a practical demonstration of quantization of DNA by Agarose gel electrophoresis using ethidium bromide. In the afternoon he demonstrated the use of computer databases to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms-popularly referred to as In Silico Technology.

P.G. ENTRANCE EXAMINATION

During the month of March 2003 the Entrance Examination for admission to P.G. Courses session 2003 was conducted on 16th March. 3991 candidates appeared for the examination. 270 candidates were called on 21st March 2003 for counseling 50 candidates were selected out for the 54 seats to be fill up by this Institute 44 candidates have joined the course as on 1st April, 2003.

JIPMER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

1. A guest lecture was held under auspices of the JIPMER Scientific Society and the Department of Tuberculosis and Chest Dieseases, JIPMER, Pondicherry at 3.15 PM on Thrusday the 4th March 2003 at Pasteur Theater. The Guest Speaker Professor V.K. Arora, Director, L.R.S. Institute of T.B. & Allied Diseases, New Delhi delivered a lecture on "Revised National tuberculosis Control Programme – Indian Perspective.

2. The Monthly Meeting of the JIPMER Scientific Society was held on 20th March 2003, Thursday at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre.

The following papers were presented:

a. Pattern of pediatric dermatomes in a referral center in South India. Deepthy V Gopinath, K Karthikeyan, B Jeevankumar, Devinder M Thappa.

b. Adult Pancytopenia – a clinicopathologic analysis of 166 cases. Shravan Kumar BR Jyothi, Bhawana A Badhe, Dutta TK.

c. A study of risk factors in predicting the need for surgery in liver abscess. Ranjit S, Pai D, Jagdish S, Dutta TK, Parija SC.

d. Dapsone syndrome: revisited. Shriya Dave, Thappa DM.

3. A special Meeting of the JIPMER Scientific Society of ICMR-PROJECT presentation for undergraduates was held on 25th March 2003, Tuesday at 3.00 PM in Pasteur Theatre.

The following papers were presented:

a. Study of erythrocyte parameters in the elderly. Veena Nandigam, Bhawana A Badhe, Jeevana.

b. Effect of shavasan on heart rate variability in normal student volunteers. J Amudhan, Madanmohan, Ananda Balayogi Bhavanani.

c. Effect of injection of histamine into basolateral nucleus of amygdale on food and water intake and body weight in albino rats. Aurobindo Prasad Das, Gopal Krushna Pal.

4. A guest lecture was held under auspices of the JIPMER Scientific Society and the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine, JIPMER, Pondicherry at 3.15 PM on Friday the 28th March 2003 at Pasteur Theater. The Guest Speaker Prof. K.R. Sundaram, Professor and Head, Department of Biostatistics, AIIMS, New Delhi delivered a lecture on "Statistical principles and methods in clinical trials".

VISITING PROFESSOR

Professor Amit Banerjee, Professor of Cardio vascular Thoracic Surgery, GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi visited the Department of Cardio Thoracic Surgery JIPMER as visiting professor during the period March 24 to 28, 2003.

He held clinical case discussions, topic reviews, and ward rounds with the post graduate MCh students. He video-graphically demonstrated Modified Maze procedure for atrial fibrillation to the faculty and Post graduates of the department. He performed and demonstrated Intra operative ablation of Atrial Fibrillation in case Undergoing Mitral Valve replacement under cardio pulmonary bypass. He also gave a guest lecture under the auspices of the JIPMER Scientific society on the topic "Evolution of Prosthetic Heart Valve-An Odyssey of Five decades and Beyond" on 27th March 2003 at Pasteur Theatre.

DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL EDUCATION

A workshop on "Hospital Contingency Plan for Management of Mass Casualties" organized by the Directorate of Health Service, Andaman & Nicobar Administration, was conducted by the following core faculty (Disaster Response Training) of the Department of Medical Education, JIPMER on 7th and 8th March 2003:

The two-day workshop was inaugurated by Shri. Hemachandran, Secretary Health and Development Commissioner of Andaman & Nicobar Administration. He highlighted the proposal to link up A&N with JIPMER for Continuing Medical Education through tele-education and for tele-medicine. Dr. (Mrs.) Namitha Md. Ali, Director of Health Services welcomed the gathering and spoke of the relevance of the 2-day workshop.

Day-1 featured a talk on "Disaster – an overview of psycho-social factors’, ‘simulation – games’ and ‘case studies’. They were highly appreciated by the participants and were found to be very relevant, interesting, inter active and informative.

On day-2, there were introductory talks on "Training in Mass Casualties" and "Elements of a Hospital Contingency Plan". After a short group game on "Co-ordination, Co-operation", the group was divided into three. They developed an outline of the following:

a. Contingency plan for mass casualties at primary care / community level /

b. Hospital contingency plan for mass casualties at G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair

c. A plan for Networking during calamities.

The Director of Health Services, A&N, Dr. Namita Mohd. Ali chaired the plenary session and plenary session and appreciated the group’s motivation and good work. She also requested for further inputs from JIPMER to strengthen their ability to cope with any mass casualty situation.

The feed back from all the participants was highly encouraging.

DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY

Dr. S.C. Parija Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, JIPMER delivered a talk on ‘Malaria in India – Epidemiology and Diagnosis’ in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry chapter meeting at CMC Vellore on 1.3.2003. The meeting was also attended by Dr. S. Sujatha, Associate Prof. of Microbiology, Dr. Annie B. Khyriem, Senior Resident, Dr. Rakhi Biswas and Dr. Suriya Kumar, P.G. Residents of the Department of Microbiology JIPMER.

DEPARTMENT OF PLASTIC SURGERY

Dr. Karoon Agrawal, Professor & Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, attended the 2nd Annual Meeting and International Update of Indian Society of Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies at Chennai, from 7-9th March 2003.

He delivered a lecture entitled "Vomerine Flap in Palatoplasty Revisited". Dr. Agrawal moderated the operative workshop and chaired a free paper session on "Orthodontics in Cleft Patients".

DEPARTMENT OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY

Dr. Habeebullah, Professor & Head participated in two case discussions – (a) Mass in abdomen – (b) Bad obstetric history with previous caesarean section and delivered a guest lecture on "HIV and pregnancy" in the CME programme for postgraduates held at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore on 8.3.2003.

Dr. Soundararaghavan, Professor also participated in the CME programme. He delivered a Guest Lecture on Urinary Stress Continence and took part in two case discussions – (1) a case of cardiac disease in pregnancy and (2) a case of urinary fistula during the CME programme held at Manipal Hospital, Bangalore on 8.3.2003.

Dr. A.Bupathy, Professor participated in a CME Training programme on Prenatal Diagnostic Techniques" conducted at Villupuram by the Directorate of Health & Family Welfare service, Villupuram on 1.3.2003.
