Workshop on "Drug collection, storage and distribution"

The Department of Pharmacy conducted a workshop on "Drug collection, storage and distribution" for the nursing staff of JIPMER on 17th & 24th of April, 2004 at the NTTC seminar room. The Director of JIPMER, Director-Professor KSVK Subba Rao inaugurated this workshop and gave the keynote address on 17th April Director-Professor C.H. Shashindran gave the keynote address on the concluding day. All the nursing staff of JIPMER Hospital who are in charge of drugs in the respective wards and operation theatres participated in this workshop. The objectives were to identify and solve the common problems faced by nurses and pharmacists in the collection of indents, storage of medications, dispensing drugs and to minimize wastage of antiseptics and disinfectants. The Head Pharmacist, Mr. C. Chinnathambi, welcomed the gathering. The Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Gnanapushpam David said that this workshop would help the nurses to clarify their problems related to the indenting of drugs. Prof. B. Gitanjali, Officer-in-Charge, Department of Pharmacy, who organized this workshop, outlined the objectives and said that this was a first step in forging a bond between two departments which need to interact very closely in order to provide the right drug at the right time to the right patient. Sister tutor Mrs. Vijaya directed a role-play "The Indent" which was appreciated by all participants. The Pharmacist, T. Srinivasan, S. Kamalanathan, C. Bhaskara Reddy and G. Nartunai spoke on various aspects of the day-to day problems in receiving incomplete indent forms, improper collection of drugs and minimizing wastage of antiseptics, disinfectants and drugs. Representing the nursing staff, G. Padma, B. Saraswathybai, J. Stella Rose, C. Leela, M. Annamma Mathew and D. Clara Daniel spoke on the inconvenient timing of indent collection, difficulties faced when dispensing drugs to patients due to drugs and packing strips looking identical, non availability of drugs during holidays and other issues. The open house session was very interactive and both departments were able to solve some of the common problems. Dr. B. Gitanjali introduced the new indent form for drugs which will be printed shortly. The workshop ended with the national anthem.

JIPMER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

The last monthly meeting of the JIPMER Scientific Society, for the session 2003-2004, was held on Friday, 30 July 2004 at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theater. Two papers were presented from Department of Surgery. The first paper was "Morbidity of chemotherapy in breast carcinoma patients receiving CMF/CAF regimen – A hospital based study" and the authors were Ajay Krishnan and Dr. Dinker Pai. The second paper was "Gall bladder perforation: a report of four cases" and the authors were Dr. Unnikrishnan, Dr. Ranjit Hari, Dr. Vaitheeswaran, Dr. Vishnu Prasad NR and Dr. Dinker Pai.

This was followed by the Annual General Body Meeting of JSS, which was chaired by Dr. T.K. Dutta, President of JSS and Professor of Medicine. Dr. G.K. Pal, Professor of Physiology and JSS Secretary presented the Annual Report of JSS for the year 2003-2004. Dr. R. Krishnan, Associate Professor of Pathology and Treasurer of JSS, presented details of the audited financial report of the year 2003-2004. Dr. Dutta thanked the members for their cooperation in conducting various JSS programmes.

Dr. Dutta appointed Dr. S. Jagdish, Professor of Surgery as the returning officer for electing new office bearers for the year 2004-2005. The following members were elected unopposed:

Election to FRCP (Edinburgh)

Dr. R. Anil Kumar, Professor of Cardiology, has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on the 30th July 2004. He had passed the MRCP (UK) examination in 1997 and, since then, had been a Collegiate Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

ENTRANCE EXAMINATIONS

  1. 3245 candidates appeared for the PG Entrance Examinations for the session April 2004, which was held on 22.02.2004. The results were published on 24.02.2004. All the eligible candidates were called for counselling, which was held from 23.03.2004 to 27.03.2004 and all the 71 seats were filled.

  2. The MBBS entrance examination was held on 30.05.2004 at Pondicherry, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Thiruvananthapuram and Mumbai centres. Out of 29,192 applications received, 19077 candidates appeared in the examination in these 7 centres. Results were announced on 3.6.2004. I MBBS classes started from19.7.2004.

  3. The Entrance Examinations for the following courses were held at JIPMER & Community Hall on 4.7.2004 and the results were published on 5.7.2004:

INAUGURATION OF NEW LECTURE THEATRES

Two New Lecture Theatres, Shushrutha Theatre & Charaka Theatre, with seating capacity of 75 each, were inaugurated by the Director on 23.7.2004. Dean, MS, HODs, Faculty, Staff & Students participated in the function.

JIPMER team selected for university challenge quiz

A team of four medical students comprising Soumik Chaudhuri, Pranav Garimella, Vijay Krishnan and Jayant Mahadevan, belonging to the third, fifth and seventh semesters, were selected to represent JIPMER in the forthcoming University Challenge Quiz. University Challenge is a prime time, elimination quiz show showcasing some of the best college quizzing brains in the country. College teams across India vie for top honours in a head to head challenge with opponent teams. This quiz show is currently slotted for a second series on BBC World and will be hosted by Siddharth Basu. The team from JIPMER was selected based on written tests, telephonic interview, personal profile and previous quizzing experience. They were ranked seventh in the list of the twenty-four teams selected for the television round. They had the added distinction of being the only medical college to make it to the second round. The team stood first in the television round (second round) which was shot in July at New Delhi. They are now preparing for the third round which is to be held in October.

Department of Microbiology

Dr. S.C. Parija, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology, was invited as Visiting Professor for the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, College of Medicine and Health Sciences, Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman from 29.5.2004 to 2.6.2004. Prof. Parija conducted the examination of B.Sc. (Health Sciences) and reviewed the curriculum of the course.

Department of TB & CD

Dr. R. Venkateswara Babu, III year PG Resident, participated in the Respiratory Medicine Quiz conducted by the Respiratory Research Foundation of India on 6.6.2004 at Hotel Breeze, Chennai and won the third prize.

Department of Dentistry

Dr. S. Balanand, Dental Surgeon, attended the Pre-adjusted Edgewise Appliance Workshop held at Hyderabad on 10th and 11th July 2004.
