LINEAR ACCELERATOR

The Linear Accelerator equipment was procured and installed at the Department of Radiotherapy for treatment of Cancer. The equipment was dedicated to the nation on 3rd October 2004 by Dr. Anbumani Ramadoss, Hon'ble Union Minister for Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao, Vice Chancellor, NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada, Shri V. Narayanasamy, Hon'ble Member of Paliament (Rajya Sabha) & Prof. M. Ramadass, Hon'ble Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) were present on the occasion.

AN OPERATIVE WORKSHOP ON CLEFT LIP RHINOPLASTY

An operative workshop on "Cleft lip Rhinoplasty" was organized on 30th September to 2nd October, 2004 by the department of Plastic Surgery as part of the annual academic activity of the department. 70 delegates including 12 faculty participated in this 3 day workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by His Excellency Lt. Gen. (Retd.) M.M.Lakhera, Lt. Governor of Pondicherry in presence of Dr. KS.V.K Subbarao as the Guest of Honour and a galaxy of invited guests on 1st October. This was followed by Keynote address by Dr. C. Thomas, Consultant Plastic Surgeon from Muscat, Oman on "Global management of Cleft-Multidisciplinary team approach"

On 30th September the faculty and delegates discussed the treatment planning of 18 cleft lip and palate patients selected for the demonstration. A breakfast session was organized for two days to discuss the topic of "Primary Rhinoplasty in Cleft lip" and "Secondary Rhinoplasty in Cleft lip".

On 1 st and 2nd October, Cleft lip repair and rhinoplasty was performed on 7 patients. Care was taken to select different types of patients for this workshop. The surgical techniques were demonstrated by following eminent international and Indian plastic surgeons:

During the workshop, there was video presentation of surgical procedures by eminent plastic surgeons Dr. Ralph Millard Jr. and Dr. I. T. Jackson from U S.A. The conference was well attended and received attention of large number of plastic surgeons, maxillo- facial surgeons and ENT surgeons trom all over the country. This workshop was sponsored by "Medical council ofIndia, New Delhi". Dr. Dinker Pai, Professor of Surgery, Dr. Dorairajan, Assoc Prof of Urology, Dr. Aparna Agrawal, Prof of Medicine, Dr. S. Balanand, Dental Surgeon and Dr. KN. Panda, CMO (NFSG) were actively involved in the organization of the workshop.

MEDICAL RELIEF TO TSUNAMI AFFECTED POPULATIONS

 

JIPMER doctors rendering relief to tsunami affected people

The Tsunami that struck the east coast of India on 26th December 2004 caused unprecedented damage and destruction. Large number of people lost their homes and were evacuated to relief camps. JIPMER played a crucial role in providing relief services. Medical Teams from JIPMER started functioning in the affected areas from the morning of 27th. Medical relief was provided to the evacuated people at Kurusukuppam and Kalapet areas. Four team of doctors and paramedical staff went to Karaikal and Nagapttinam. Dr. T.K. Dutta, Dr. K.A. Narayan, Dr. Dinkar Pai, Dr. S. Mahadevan, Dr. Vishnu Prasad and Dr. Bupathy were the members of the three teams that went to Nagapattinam. Dr. Gautam Roy went to Karaikal and Dr S B Rotti organized the camps in Pondicherry.

The teams set up camps in the various villages and relief camps in the affected areas, often traveling long distances to reach inaccessible villages. Over 3000 people were treated.

Medicines, vaccines and supplies worth Rupees Seven lakhs were handed over to the Joint Director of Health, Nagapattinam.

A Tsunami Surveillance Unit has now been set up in collaboration with VCRC. The central Government has given funds for the surveillance activities. Outbreaks of Chicken Pox and Measles in the District of Cuddalore were investigated and the reports sent to The Director General of Health Services.

EQAS WORKSHOP

The 3rd phase external quality assurance scheme in HIV testing was conducted by the Department of Microbiology, JIPMER and Pondicherry AIDS Control Society for medical officers and laboratory technicians on 5th and 6th October 2004. The objective of the workshop was to provide hands on training to the participants in the different diagnostic techniques for HIV antibody detection. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof.K.S.V.K.Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER, Pondicherry.

A total of 20 participants (10 medical officers and 10 Lab technicians) from both Govt./Private Medical colleges and blood banks in the Union territory of Pondicherry attended the workshop.

A series of lectures by eminent speakers both internal and external faculty drawn from various specialties were organized as part of the workshop. The workshop was attended by the 10 Laboratory technicians on both 5th and 6th while the Medical officers attended on 6th October 2004.

Coded serum panels were distributed to all participating laboratories with instructions to perform the test using kits supplied to them and they were asked to report back the results to the Department of Microbiology JIPMER. Analyses of their test results were noted and a feedback was sent about the laboratory results, including performance and suggestions for improvement, if required.

MEMBER OF INTERNATIONAL ADVISORY BOARD

Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor and Head Dept. of Medicine, has been included as Member of International Advisory Board for the forth coming 20th Edition of DAVIDSON’S PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICE OF MEDICINE. He has already attended the meeting of the advisory board at Chennai and will contribute to the editorial content of the new edition in 2006.

INTER-UNIVERSITY TOURNAMENT

The Tennis (men) team of JIPMER students participated in the Inter-collegiate Tennis tournament cum Pondicherry University team selection trials on 11.9.2004. Dr. Ankur Mondelia, Atul Malkotra and Jayant Mahadevan, II MBBS were selected to represent the Pondicherry University Tennis Team to participate in the South Zone Inter-University tournament. Dr. Ankur Mondelia and Jayant Mahadevan participated in the tournament held at Gwalior from 7.11.2004 to 10.11.2004. They played till Quarter finals in the tournament.

The Hokey (men) team of JIPMER students participated in the Inter collegiate Hokey tournament cum Pondicherry University team selection trials held at JIPMER on 27.9.2004. Dr. Anil Kumar Muwal, Dr. Abhishek and Sandose, B.Sc. (MLT) were selected to represent the Pondicherry University team and participated in the South Zone Inter University Hockey tournament held at Annamalai University from 6.12.2004 to 10.12.2004.

  2. Dr. Shyam Visweswaran, Fellow in Biomedical Informatics, University of Pittsburgh, USA and JIPMER alumni, MBBS batch of 1983, who is currently hosting the www.jipmer.edu website on his own expenses, visited JIPMER on the 29th of October, 2004. He addressed the JIPMER Scientific Society on the 29th of October, 2004 at 3.15 pm and gave a guest lecture on " Can Computers help in clinical decision making?". This meeting was attended by around 90 members, who actively interacted with Dr Shyam. He also gave a talk in the Department of Community medicine and discussed various aspects of bioinformatics with the community medicine post graduate students.

  3. The Annual Faculty Oration of the JIPMER Scientific Society was held on 8th of November2004 at 3.15 pm in Theatre Pasteur, JIPMER. Dr K. Sathyanarayana Reddy, Dean JIPMER and Director-Professor & Head of Radiotherapy delivered the oration. He spoke on " Carcinoma of the Uterine Cervix-Evaluation of treatment strategies". Dr Reddy spoke at length on the evolution of treatment strategies in his department over the last three decades. The President of the Society handed over a scroll to Dr Reddy after the oration. Director, Dr Subba Rao presented a momento.

  4. The monthly meeting of JSS for the month of November 2004 was held on 19th Friday at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. Dr. M. Ravisankar, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesiology, JIPMER. Have a lead talk on "Scope and Safety of Anaesthesia in JIPMER". This was followed by three paper presentations:

PARTICIPATION OF JIPMER IN HOLISTIC HEALTH FAIR

Holistic Health Fair was organized by Pondicherry branch of Prajapita Brahmakumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya from 15-10-2004 to 20-10-2004 at Anna Thidal Faculty and staff of JIPMER participated in it by conducting a free medical camp on 16-10-2004 between 9.00 AM and 2.00 PM. Five departments participated in this camp. These included Preventive & Social Medicine, General Medicine, ENT, Paediatrics and Dermatology & Venereal Diseases. A total of 385 patients were treated and 50 of them were referred. The faculty and the staff who participated in the camp included one Professor-cum-field epidemiologist, one Professor, one Assistant Professor, one Chief Medical Officer, four Senior residents, one Junior resident, three Interns, one male health supervisor, one public health nurse, two peons, one attendant and one driver. BOOK EXHIBITION 21-23 SEPTEMBER 2004

Book Exhibition was conducted at the JIPMER Administrative Block from 21st to 23rd September 2004 for the selection of books required to be purchased for the Central Library, Departmental Libraries and Book Bank for SC/ST during the year 2004-2005. The Exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. K.S.V.K Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER in the gracious presence of the Dean Dr. K.S. Reddy, and other Senior Faculty Members, Residents, Staff & Students on 21st September 2004 at 10.00 am. In all, nine firms have exhibited a wide collection of latest Medical, Para-medical and General books.

During the three day Exhibition, large number of Faculty, Resident Doctors, Postgraduates, Undergraduates and Staff members from various Departments have visited the various stalls and identified books of their interest available in each category. They also benefited by purchasing personal copies of various books by availing the discount offered. The exhibition went on till 6 PM on 23rd September 2004.

3rd  NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON SIMLE DIAGNOSTIC METHODS IN INFECTIOUS DISEASES HELD

FROM 7th to 11th  DECEMBER 2004

Inauguration of 3rd National Workshop on Simple diagnostic methods in infectious diseases by Dr. A.K. Bhatnagar, Vice-Chancellor, Pondicherry University, Pondicherry

A five day national workshop on Simple Diagnostic Methods in Infectious Diseases was conducted from 7-11th December 2004 in the Department of Microbiology, JIPMER, Pondicherry. The main objective of the workshop was to demonstrate through hands-on training the various rapid, simple and inexpensive diagnostic techniques suitable for application and adaptation in a low cost laboratory. Twenty three participants from Delhi, Srinagar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, West Bengal, Orissa, Kamataka, Kerala, Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh attended the workshop. Dr. S.C. Parija, Director Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology was the Course Coordinator for the workshop.

Dr. A.K. Bhatnagar, Vice Chancellor of Pondicherry University inaugurated the workshop. Professor K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER delivered the inaugural address and Prof. K.S. Reddy, Dean released the Standard Operative Procedure (SOP) manual.

Lectures delivered during the workshop included Diarrhoeagenic Echerichia coli, approach to diagnosis of fungal infections, simple methods in the diagnosis of parasitic infections and diagnosis of leptospirosis.

Hands-on-training was given to the participants regarding various simple diagnostic tests relevant to the various branches of Microbiology.

Participants gave an excellent feedback that the workshop was very useful and the hands on training given to them will be applied to their respective laboratories.

The valedictory function was held on 11th December 2004. Dr. K.S.V. K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER delivered the valedictory address and distributed the certificates to the participants. A CD on the proceedings of the workshop was also released by him.

HINDI DIWAS/FORTNIGHT was celebrated as usual this year also and various competitions were organised during this September month for the staff members in connection with Hindi Diwas/Fortnight competitions.

Dr Madan Mohan Trakroo, Director-Professor and HOD of Physiology & Chairman JIPMER Official Language Implementation Committee (JOLIC) also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Manohar Kant Srivastava, Chief Medical Officer (O.S.D), and the Vice-Chairman, JIPMER Official Language Implementation Committee (JOLIC) presented the report of activities of the JIPMER Official Language Implementation Committee.

A prize distribution ceremony was also held on this occasion. Winners of respective competitions and staff who did their work in Hindi on that day were awarded with the prizes along with the participation certificates.

The Town Official Language lmplementation Committee (TOLIC), Pondicherry sponsored Hindi Fortnight Celebrations was held at JIPMER Pondicherry from 1st September to 15th September 2004.

The various programmes and competitions in Hindi were organized during the celebrations and a good number of office staff from the member offices and children from various schools, College and University participated in these programmes. The details of the programme as follows.

Speaking on this occasion the Chief Guest, Dr. K.S.V.K Subba Rao Director, JIPMER and Chairman Town Official Language Implementation Committee. Pondicherry, appreciated the activities of TOLIC. Dr. N.G. Srinivasan, Sr. Divisonal Manager. New India Assurance Co. Ltd. was the Guest of honour.

Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi, HOD, Dept. of Hindi, Pondicherry University and Dr. Madan Mohan Trakroo, Director-Professor & HOD of Physiology, JIPMER, also spoke on the occasion. Dr. Manohar Kant Srivastava. Chief Medical Officer (O.S.D), JIPMER and Secretary, Town Official Language Implementation Committee presented the annual report and also presented the report about the activities of the Town Official Language Implementation Committee. Pondicherry. Prizes to the winners along with the Certificates of respective competitions were awarded by the Chief Guest and Guest of Honour.

MOLECULAR BIOLOGY LABORATORY

 

Inauguration of Molecular biology laboratory in the Department of Microbiology by Prof. R. Sambasiva Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. N.T.R University of Health Services, Vijayawada. AP

The Molecular biology laboratory in the Department of Microbiology JIPMER was inaugurated on 5th October 2004 by Prof. R Sambasiva Rae, Vice Chancellor, NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada. Molecular diagnostic techniques such as Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) will be performed in the laboratory for definitive identification of infectious etiological agents which are difficult to isolate and identify using conventional phenotypic methods. This facility will be preliminarily used for diagnosis of tuberculous meningitis and leptospirosis, two commonest infections in a developing country where accurate identification is essential for prompt institution of therapy. This facility will at a later date also be extended for uses in other infectious diseases. The other aspect of the molecular biology laboratory will be used as a platform by Ph.D. scholars and MD students of the department to perform cutting edge research as part of their thesis and dissertations.

Director

Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director and Head of the Dept. of Cardiothoracic Surgery, delivered the Dr. P. Brahmayya Sastry Memorial Oration on 26th December 2004 at Andhra Medical College Visakhapatnam. The topic for the oration was "Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at JIPMER".

Department of Medical Education

  1. The 49th National Course on Educational Science for Teachers of Health Professionals was held from 4 to 13th October, 2004. 24 participants from Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Assam and Pondicherry participated in the workshop. Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao. Vice Chancellor, NTR University of Health Sciences, Vijayawada inaugurated the function. The 10 day programme was conducted as usual with active participation by all concerned. The workshop concluded with the valedictory function. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor & Head of the Department of Medical Education welcomed the gathering and read the course report. Dr. K.S.Reddy, Dean, felicitated the function and Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, delivered the valedictory address and gave away the certificates to the participants. Dr. Mariette D'Souza, Professor of Skin & STD proposed the vote of thanks. All the 24 participants became life members of Alumni Association of NTTC.

  2. Dr. KR. Sethuraman, Director-Professor of Medicine attended the second meeting of the National Committee on "Mass casualty management for Hospital managers" held on 13.11.2004 at Safdarjung Hospital, New Delhi. Dr. Salhan, Medical Superintendent of Safdariung Hospital chaired the meeting. Dr. P. Ravindran, Director, Emergency Medical Relief, Directorate General of Health Services presented the topics for the modules to be used in training. Each topic was discussed and allotted to various members.

The following modular segments were allotted to JIPMER.

i. Vulnerability analysis

ii. Information management during mass casualty

iii. Mass casualty management at different levels of health care

3. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor & Head of Medical Education, Dr. C.H. Shashindran, Director-Professor & Head of Pharmacology and Dr. K.A. Narayan, Professor & Head of P & SM attended a one day symposium on "Dental Education for Public Health Dentistry" arranged on 11.12.2004 at Chennai as a part of Scientific Programme of 9th National Conference of the Indian Association of Public Health Dentistry.

A total of six topics viz. (1) Systems Approach, (2) Taxonomy of Education, (3) T.L. Principles, (4) I.T. in Dental Education (5) Critical Look at MCQ and (6) Dental Ethics were conducted during the day. About 100 participants from various Dental Colleges participated. The participants appreciated all the presentations made by the NTTC Resources Persons.

As a continuation of Masters Trainer workshop, the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University arrange a one day workshop on Objective Structured Clinical Examination at the Government Medical College. Kilpauk, Chennai. Prof. K.R. Sethuraman, attended as a Resource Person. 30 participants attended the programme from clinical departments of medical colleges of Chenglepet and Chennai. A live demo of 20 OSCE stations was also arranged. The program was appreciated by all the participants as the University plans to start OSCE in final examination in the near future.

Department of Cardiology

  1. Dr. J Balachander, Professor and Head of Department of Cardiology and Dr. R. Anilkumar, Professor of Cardiology were invited as Faculty to CARTEMO - a teaching program for DM and DNB trainees held at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai on the 15- 16th October, 2004. Dr. Balachander took a bedside clinics for the post-graduates and chaired a session on "Sudden Cardiac Death". Dr. R. Anilkumar gave a lecture on "Trouble shooting and Follow up of Implantable Defibrillators".

  2. The South Asian Training Course in Cardiac Electrophysiology was conducted in Southern Railway Hospital, Perambur, Chennai from October 14 to 16th, 2004. Dr R. Anilkumar was a faculty member at this course and Dr. Raja Sekhar Varma, and Dr Santosh Sateesh, Senior Residents underwent training in electrophysiology and radiofrequency ablation. Dr. Anilkumar gave a lecture on "Differential diagnosis of broad complex tachycardia" during the training program.

  3. The annual conference of the Cardiological Society of India was held in the Palace Grounds in Bangalore from 1 to 5th December 2004. Dr. R. Anilkumar, Dr. R.S. Varma and Dr. Santosh Satheesh, Senior residents in Cardiology, Dr. Prakash, Senior resident of Physiology, Dr. Gobu, Junior resident of Medicine, Mr. Vijay Kumar and Mr. Gajendran, Cath-lab Technicians, Sister-in-charge of cath-lab Mrs. Esther Sundar, Staff nurses Mrs. Katherine Selvi and Mrs. Sahaya Rani participated in the conference. All the delegates from JIPMER attended the interventional council meetings and the live workshops. The following eight papers were presented in the conference from JIPMER:

Department of Pathology

  1. Professor Dr. Tejindar Singh, Director Professor and Head of Department, Department of Pathology, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi was invited to the department as Visiting Professor from 13 to 15th October, 2004. During his stay, he delivered a guest lecture at JIPMER Scientific Society on ‘Bone marrow trephine biopsy in clinical practice’. Dr. Singh also gave a talk on ‘Disorders of mononuclear phagocytic system’. He took an undergraduate theory class on ‘General principles of hemolytic anemia’ for V Semester MBBS students. In addition, he moderated two slide discussion sessions with the postgraduate students of Pathology department. He also interacted with the laboratory and technical staff of the Hematology section of Pathology department. The faculty members and residents of Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics also attended his lectures. Overall, it was three days of academic bonanza in the field of hematology, which was extremely beneficial to all.

  2. Dr. N. Siddaraju, Professor and Dr. Debdatta Basu, Professor were invited as guest speakers at the 32nd Annual Conference of the Karnataka Chapter of from 29th to 31st October 2004 at Bangalore. Dr. Siddaraju spoke on ‘Recent trends in fluid cytology’ and also conducted a slide session of interesting cases. Dr. Basu spoke on ‘Utility of bone marrow trephine biopsy’.

  3. Dr. Debdatta Basu and Dr. N. Siddaraju attended the Annual Conference of Indian Association of Pathologists and Microbiologists (APCON 2004) held at Armed Forces Medical College, Pune from 22nd to 25th November 2004. Dr. Basu was an invited faculty and spoke on ‘Hematological manifestations in HIV/AIDS’ at the Annual meeting of International Academy of Pathologists – Indian Division there. Dr. Siddaraju presented a poster entitled ‘Fine needle aspiration cytology in leprosy’, the authors of which were N. Siddaraju, P. Yaranal.

  4. 4. The following residents attended the 45th Annual Conference of Indian Society of Hematology and Transfusion Medicine held at Christian Medical College, Vellore from 18 to 20th November, 2004.

He delivered a lecture on "Cytomorphologic Spectrum of Tubercular in HIV Patients in India". Dr. Siddharaju, Professor of Pathology also attended the conference.

Department of Physiology

Dr. Madanmohan, Director-Professor & Head of the Department of Physiology, Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Professor, Dr Girwar Singh Gaur, Associate Professor, Dr. Pravati Pal, Assistant Professor, Drs. ES. Prakash and P N. Ravindra, senior residents, and Mr. P Pavithran and Mrs. P Shyma, Ph. D. scholars, from the Dept. of Physiology, JI PMER, attended the Golden APPICON (50th Annual conference of Association of Physiologists and Pharmacologists of India), held at NIMHANS, Bangalore from 19-22nd December, 2004. All except Dr. E.S. Prakash also attended the pre-conference CME program on pathophysiology of neuro degenerative diseases. Dr. Madanmohan chaired a session and also was adjudicator for the "Harish Gupta Prize for the best research paper presented by an under graduate Dr. G.K. Pal was awarded the Dr. Sushil Thakur Prakruthi Mandir prize for research investigations in the field of Natural Health, Naturopathy and Yoga. Dr. G.K. Pal also was one of the adjudicators for the best poster competition.

Conference attendees from Dept. of Physiology, JI PMER, also presented the following posters in the meeting: (1) "Subnormal pressor response to sustained handgrip in undernourished children" by G.S. Gaur; (2) "Effects of injection of histamine in to nucleus caudatus on food intake and body weight in albino rats" by Pravati Pal; (3) "Inverse correlation between rate-pressure product and short term heart rate variability indices in subjects with recent onset hypertension and hypertensives on amlodipine" by E.S. Prakash; (4) "Effect of pranayam and relaxation training on the frequency of benign ventricular ectopics in two patients with palpitations" by P.N. Ravindra; (5) "Short-term heart rate variability indices at rest and early phase of tilt table test predict test out come in females with syncope but not males" by P. Pavithran Aishwarya Krishnamurthy, undergraduate student, presented a paper entitled "Futile cycling in physiologic control systems: a price paid for fine control?" in the Harish Gupta Prize Session. Mr. Pavithran also attended the Department of Science and Technology sponsored pre-conference workshop on Brain and Behavior held at NIMHANS. Dr. Madanmohan has proposed to organize the 51st Annual conference of APPI at JIPMER, Pondicherry, in December 2005.

Dr. Judo J. Vachaparambil, Senior Resident and Dr. R. Venkateswara Babu, III year P.G. Resident attended the National Conference on Pulmonary diseases "NAPCON-2004" at Ahmedabad from 16th to 21st November 2004. Dr. R. Venkateswara Babu presented a poster entitled "Clinical and Radiological Profile of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Associated Diabetes Mellitus".

Dr. S. Vinod Kumar, Associate Professor & Head, Dept. of TB & CD, attended the "National Consultation on Nutritional Security and the Prevention, Treatment and Mitigation of TB & HIV/AIDS in India" at Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, Teen Murti House, New Delhi from 2-3rd December, 2004.

Department of Medicine

  1. The International Colloquium on Diabetes & Pregnancy was held at Chennai on 11th & 12th December 2004. It had many International experts and few national faculty working in the field of Pregnancy Diabetes. Dr. Aparna Agrawal, Professor of Medicine presented a paper on ‘Evaluation of FPG, RPG and 50 gm GCT as screening test for GFM and IGT vs The gold standard 100 gm OGTT in pregnant women’. It was one of the 4 papers accepted for platform presentation and was well received.

  2. Dr. Aparna Agrawal participated in the Emergency Medicine Update-2004 held on 30.10.2004 at AIIMS, New Delhi and gave a talk on "Approach to Acute abdominal pain". She also chaired a Scientific Programme on Environmental emergencies.

Department of Skin & STD

1. Dr. D.M. Thappa, Professor & Head and two of the postgraduates attended the Conference: 28th National Conference of IASSTD & AIDS held at Jabalpur from 2 – 4th November 2004.

Dr. D.M. Thappa participated in the CME Programme by delivering a Guest Lecture "Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of anogenital warts".

The following two papers were presented in the Conference:

i. Clinical and Morphological Variations in Herpes zoster in Normal Vs HIV infected persons – A.K. Dubey, D.M. Thappa, T.J. Jaisankar.

ii. Esthiomene – A complication of lupus vulgaris and sorofuloderma – M. Senthilkumar, Rashmi Kumari, B. Jeevankumar and Devinder M Thappa.

The paper presented by Dr. A.K. Dubey, Final year postgraduate got the 3rd prize under Dr. Govinda Nair memorial award papers.

2. Dr. D.M. Thappa, Dr. (Mrs.) Mariette D’Souza, Professor, Dept. of Skin & STD along with three postgraduates, attended the 1st National Congress of Paediatric Dermatology (DERMPED-2004) held at Chennai from 26-28th 2004.

Dr. D.M. Thappa, delivered a Guest Lecture on ‘Principles of topical therapy’ and he was also one of the Panelists in the discussion on ‘Child with itching’. Dr. (Mrs.) Mariette D’Souza, chaired one scientific session.

Department of Dentistry

Dr. S. Balanand, Dental Surgeon attended the Workshop of the 22nd Tamil Nadu State Dental Conference from 25-28th November 2004.

The conference was held at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Pondicherry.

Dr. S. Balanand presented one paper and one poster as mentioned below:

Correction of mandibular deformity by intra-oral distraction Osteogenosis (Paper).

A case report of squamous cell carcinoma with pseudosarcomatous and basaloid features (Poster).

He was also the Chairperson for oral surgery paper in students convention.

Department of Plastic Surgery

Dr. Karoon Agrawal, Professor & Head of the Dept. of Plastic Surgery attended the 39th National Conference of the Association of Plastic Surgeons of India – APSICON – 2004 at Jaipur, Rajasthan from 23-27th November 2004.
