INSTITUTE DAY

The Institute Day function was held on Saturday the 7th February 2004 at 5.30 p.m. in the Banting Hall. Prof. A.K. Bhatnagar, Vice Chancellor, Pondicherry University was the Chief Guest. He presented the scrolls to the outgoing graduates, distributed prizes and addressed the gathering. Prof. K.S.V.K. Subbarao, Director, in his address, presented the academic achievements of students and faculties and the hospital service during the year 2003. Prof. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent gave the welcome address. Prof. K.S. Reddy, Dean administered the Oath to the Medical graduates. Mr. Anjan Pyal, President, JIPMER Students Association gave the felicitation. Prof. M.M. Trakroo, Staff Adviser to students, gave the vote of thanks.

Seventy two MBBS graduates and 14 B.Sc. (MLT) candidates received the scrolls. 30 Endowment prizes were given to MBBS students, one prize to B.Sc. (MLT) student and 9 prizes to MD/MS and M.Sc. (Medical Biochemistry) students.

During this year, the following additional prizes were given:

1. Dr. S.C. Mitra & Mrs. Geetha Mitra prize for Anatomy for MBBS course.

2. Dr. S.C. Mitra & Mrs. Geetha Mitra prize for Best Intern.

3. Dr. S.C. Mitra & Mrs. Geetha Mitra prize for MD (General Medicine).

4. Dr. S.C. Mitra & Mrs. Geetha Mitra prize for MS (General Surgery).

5. Smt. Nishamani Parija Endowment prize for Physiology for MBBS course.

6. Smt. Nishamani Parija Endowments prize for Surgery for MBBS course.

7. Dr. Balakrishnan Endowment prize for MD (Paediatrics)

Dr. Vijay Aluri and Dr. Femitha shared the Best All-round under graduate MBBS student award. Dr. Femitha was selected as the Best Outgoing MBBS graduate of the year 2003.

REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS

Republic Day was celebrated as usual at JIPMER, Pondicherry. The Director, JIPMER, Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao hoisted the National Flag. He, in his address to the staff and students, encouraged everyone to work towards the progress of JIPMER and the nation as a whole. The security staff of JIPMER presented a march past. BATCH OF 1956 & 1957 GET TOGETHER

The first and second batch of MBBS students of JIPMER (1956 & 1957) held a get-together at Pondicherry. As part of this, a C.M.E. programme was held on the 24th of January 2004 at Pasteur Theatre. The Director, Dr. Subba Rao inaugurated the CME and delivered the keynote address. Dr. K.S. Reddy, Dean, presided over the function Dr. D.B. Bisht, former Director General Health Service, felicitated the occasion. The scientific session included talks an relevant topics in Orthopedics; Surgery; Medicine including Neurology and Cardiology by the old students. This was followed by lunch for all at the Community Hall. The patron of this meet Dr. K.B. Ramanathan, Cardiologist, from Memphis, USA co-ordinated the whole meeting.

FAREWELL TO Dr. BADRINATH

Dr. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent, was transferred as Deputy Director General (M), Directorate General of Health Services, Nirman Bhavan, New Delhi.

He was relieved on 21.2.2004 from JIPMER. A farewell party was arranged on 20.2.2004 at Vesaluis Squre. Dr. Bordoloi, Chief Medical Officer (Administration) welcomed the gathering. Dr. Parija, Professor & Head of Microbiology talked about how Dr. Badrinath was instrumental in setting up the Virology lab at JIPMER. Many Heads of Departments spoke about the contribution of Dr. Badrinath towards JIPMER, both as the Head of Microbiology and as Medical Superintendent. The Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Gnanapushpam David, talked about how Dr. Badrinath, as Medical Superintendent solved the problem of congestion in the labour room to a great extent. The Director and Dean also spoke on the occasion. A memento was presented to Dr. Badrinath by the Director Dr. Badrinath in his farewell speech, talked about how he would attempt to help JIPMER even while he was posted at Delhi. The CMO (Officer on Special Duty); Dr. M.K. Srivastava delivered the vote of thanks.

MEDICAL CAMP AT SORAPET

A one-day medical camp was conducted on 11.1.2004 by the Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha, Pondicherry at the Premises of Bharathi English Medium School, Sorapet to celebrate the birthday of our Prime Minister, Shri. A.B. Vajpayee.

Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER, inaugurated the camp in the presence of Shri. M. Visweswaran, BJP State General Secretary, Smt. M. Vijayalakshmi, State President, BJP Mahila Morcha and several other party functionaries. About 20 doctors including one Professor-cum-Field Epidemiologist, one Professor, six Senior Residents, six Junior Residents and six Interns from JIPMER, Pondicherry participated in the camp. The departments of Gen Medicine, Gen. Surgery, Paediatrics. Obstetrics & Gynaecology, ENT, Ophthalmology and Preventive & Social Medicine participated in the camp. The support staff included two staff Nurses, one PHN, one Pharmacist, one Laboratory Technician, two Nursing Attendants, three Safaiwalas/Peons and one driver.

A total of 600 patients were treated and 35 of them were referred to JIPMER for further treatment. Free medicines were distributed to all the patients. Specialty wise break up of the patients was as follows:

VISIT OF ICMR COMMITTEE

A high power committee of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi visited the Department of Pharmacology, JIPMER on 21.1.2004. The objective of the visit was to assess the infrastructural facilities available in the department for establishing an "Advanced Center of Pharmacogenomics". The members of the committee were Prof. B.N. Dhawan, former Director of CDRI, Lucknow, Prof. S.D. Seth, former Head of the Department of Pharmacology, AIIMS and Chair, Clinical Pharmacology, ICMR, Dr. N. Kshirsagar, Dean, Seth G.S. Medical College and K.E.M. hospital, Mumbai and Dr. P.S. Chauhan, retired Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Center, Mumbai. The committee agreed in principle to consider establishing an "Advanced Center of Pharmacogenomics" in the Department of Pharmacology, JIPMER, Pondicherry.

WORKSHOP ON CARE IN EMERGENCY: ROLE OF A NURSE

A workshop on "Care in Emergency: role of a nurse" was conducted in JIPMER from 20.1.2004 to 23.1.2004.

The inauguration of the workshop was on 20.1.2004 in the NTTC Seminar Hall. Thirty one participants from General hospitals of Pondicherry, Cuddalore, Thiruvannamalai, Arni, Polur and JIPMER at the grade of Staff Nurse, Nursing Sister attended the workshop. Mrs. Gnanapushpam David, CNO and the Course Co-ordinator welcomed the gathering. Dr. Mohan Rao, Additional Medical Superintendent presided over the function. He in his address pointed out that Nursing Staff have to update their knowledge on par with the advancement in science and medical technology. Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao delivered the inaugural address. He stressed that Nursing Staff are the key person in the health care delivery system. The workshop was beneficial to all the participants. The valedictory function was held on 23.1.2004 at 4 PM in the NTTC seminar hall. Mrs. Gnanapushpam David, CNO Superintendent presided over the function. Dr. Mohan Rao, Additional Medical Superintendent delivered the valedictory address. A response speech was delivered by a participant. Certificates were distributed by Dr. Mohan Rao. Pre-test and post-test were conducted. The function came to an end with vote of thanks by Mr. R.S. Ramesh, Nursing Tutor.

12th ANNUAL INTERNS' ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

The Department of Medical Educational conducted the 12th Annual Interns' Orientation Programme on Quality Care for the batch of January 2004. The programme was held for three days from 28th to 30th January 2004 at the NTTC Seminar Hall. About 65 interns participated actively in the workshop covering medical ethics, oral and written communication skills, rational use of diagnostic test, rational use of therapy, personal drugs concept, essential drugs concept and handling of medical promotion and medical representatives.

On 28th February the programme was inaugurated by Dr. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent who highlighted the importance of quality care in context of future medical career. Thirteen faculty members facilitated the proceedings. Faculty members Mrs. Vany Adithan and Dr. Uma Chandrasekar from Law College, Pondicherry and School of Management, Pondicherry, respectively conducted two sessions. Dr. K.S. Reddy, Dean of JIPMER delivered the valedictory address and stressed the importance of utilizing the opportunity of internship for gaining practical skills and develop professionalism.

JIPMER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

1. A Guest Lecture was organized on 16th January 2004, Friday at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. The speaker was Dr. Sita Naik, Professor and Head of Immunology, Sanjay Gandhi Post-graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI), Lucknow who is an eminent scientist, well known for here contribution in the field of HLA, viral hepatitis and vaccinology. She spoke on the topic – "Current status of Hepatitis E".

2. The Annual Alumni Oration of JIPMER Scientific Society for 2003-2004 was held on 23rd January, 2004 (Friday), at 3.15 PM, in Pasteur Theatre. Dr. T. Santha Devi, Deputy Director (Senior Grade), Tuberculosis Research Center, Chennai, delivered the oration on: "Evolving Trends in Chemotherapy of Tuberculosis".

The meeting was attended by about 120 members of JSS including senior ex-faculty of JIPMER, JIPMER alumni members, faculty of other medical institutes of Pondicherry. This was chaired by President of JSS, Dr. T.K. Dutta, Professor of Medicine. The programme began with Dr. Dutta welcoming the members and giving a brief introduction to the importance of the Annual Faculty Oration. Then Dr. Sivaraman, President of JIPMER Alumni Association (JAA) introduced Dr. T. Santha Devi to the audience. This was followed by Dr. Santha Devi delivering her talk, which was a summary of her various experiences and research works in the field of TB management.

The talk was highly appreciated by the audience. The JSS president felicitated her with a medal. Dr. K.S.V.K. Subbarao, Director of JIPMER, presented a scroll to her, and Dr. Sivaraman, President of JAA presented her a memento. The secretary of JSS, Dr. G.K. Pal, Professor of Physiology proposed the vote of thanks. This was followed by a high tea.

3. The monthly meeting was held on 23rd February 2004, Monday at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. Dr. J. Balachander, Professor and Head of Department of Cardiology presented a brief review of his experiences with percutaneous valvuloplasties, which comprised of 1137 cases over a period of 102 months with follow-up. One original scientific research paper from Department of Pediatrics entitled "Hematological parameters in perinatal asphyxia" was presented by Dr. B. Vishnu Bhat, Professor of Pediatrics. A clinical case report on "Arteriovenous malformation of the external ear" was presented by Dr. Sunil Kumar Saxena, Associate Professor from the department of ENT. Dr. E.S. Prakash, PG student from the Department of Physiology presented a case report entitled "Effect of deep breathing at 6 breaths per minute on premature ventricular depolarization". The meeting was chaired by President of JSS – Dr. T.K. Dutta, Professor of Medicine. The secretary, Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Professor of Physiology proposed the vote of thanks.

PRE GRAD DAY CELEBRATIONS

The pre-grad day celebrations were conducted at Lister Square on the 5th of February, 2004. The programme started with the batch of baby juniors presenting a brilliant dance, a suitable start to what was to be a wonderful evening. This was followed by two songs presented from the same batch.

The staff programme started with Mr. Trivedi from the Hindi Cell singing a ‘Bidai song’ for the batch of ’98. Dr. Steven entertained the crowed with a superb cover of Elton John’s ‘Sacrifice’. Dr. Prakash, PG student of Physiology, played the mandolin.

Dr. Pranhita, PG of Obstetrics & Gynaecology with her group, danced on a popular number from the movie ‘Khakee’. Dr. Shanti Ananthakrishnan and group enthralled the crowed with their medley, while Dr. Kalra was very good on the flute.

Dr. Sudha Rao, Ex. H.O.D., Anatomy, dedicated a poem to the graduating batch. With ‘JALWA’, a presentation by Dr. Kate’s group, the evening shifted gears. Professors Ananthakrishnan, Srinivasan, Vishnu Bhatt, Dinker Pai, Renuka, Aparna Agarwal, Basu and Saxena danced on the latest numbers with students of the graduating batch. Dr. K.A. Narayan and Mrs. Narayan presented a duet, and the skit ‘Scrotocoel’ by Surgery unit I was highly entertaining.

Dr. Pai’s skit "Bush Bush Pyar War" sent the crowd into fits of laughter. The staff programme concluded with Dr. Batmanabane and Dr. Gitanjali dancing on a groovy Tamil track.

To close the evening, bands from all the batches performed and the batches of ’98, ’99 and 2001 and BSc MLT danced to catchy numbers.

STAFF NEWS

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery

1. Prof. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER and Director-Professor and Head of the Department of the Cardiothoracic Surgery has been elected as a fellow of National Academy of Medical Sciences (INDIA) in recognition of his contribution to the field of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.

2. Dr. K. Madhan Kumar, Dr. Sudheer M. Bhat and Dr. Aratatran Nahak, M.Ch. Students, attended the 50th Golden Jubilee Annual Conference of Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons, held at New Delhi from 19th-22nd February 2004.

The following papers were presented from our Department in the above conference:

i. "Mid-colon Esophagocoloplasty" – A new technique. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, N. Ananthakrishnan, K. Madhan Kumar.

ii. "A study of RVOT obstruction over eleven years" – JIPMER experience. Sudheer M. Bhat, Chiran Babu, B.V. Sai Chandiran, Ravi Shankar, M. Nachiappan, K.S.V.K. Subba Rao.

Department of Medical Education

1. The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai organized a workshop on "Current Concept" from 16th to 20th February, 2004. Dr. C.H. Shashindran, Director-Professor & Head of the Department of Pharmacology, Dr. K.A. Narayan, Professor & Head of Department of P& SM and Dr. Mariette D. Souza, Professor of Skin & STD participated as observer-cum-resource person. They took active part in Group Dynamic, P.L. Media, MCQ, Oral Examiniation and Evaluation Principles. The observers have noted with satisfaction that the masters’ trainers of Dr. M.G.R. Medical University training at JIPMER, are steadily improving in their competence in these areas.

2. The Department of Medical Education organized and conducted a training programme on ‘Hands on training on clinical management of HIV/AIDS’ for senior faculty members from Medical Colleges in Pondicherry from 17th to 19th February 2004, sponsored by the Pondicherry AIDS Control Society (PACS), Pondicherry. The resource persons were from JIPMER, PACS and National AIDS Control Organization. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER. He highlighted the changing scenario of HIV/AIDS in India and requested all teaching faculty to be aware of current realities so that they can impart effective training to junior doctors.

There were 32 participants from JIPMER Pondicherry, Directorate of Health & Family Welfare Services, Pondicherry, Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi Dental College, Mahatma Gandhi Medical College, Aarupadi Veedu Medical College, Pondicherry and Vinayaka Medical Mission, Karaikal from pre and para clinical departments. The participants were very enthusiastic and the programme went beyond the schedule time due to active participation of all concerned. The valedictory function was held at 3.30 PM on 19th February, 2004. Dr. N. Ananthakrishna, Ag. Medical Superintendent, JIPMER delivered the valedictory address. He stressed the importance of not being bookish in approaching to HIV/AIDS but being pragmatic and adopting feasible solutions for tackling HIV/AIDS. He suggested the NACO and PACS must prepare their own module, suitable for Indian conditions rather than following the WHO norms, which may not be totally relevant to India.

On behalf of Pondicherry AIDS Control Society, Dr. G.L.V. Chalapahy Rao, Project Director, PACS proposed the vote of thanks and also sought co-operation of JIPMER administration in conducting several training programmes for various health functionaries on on-going basis. He offered full support for learning resources and necessary funding.

3. The 48th National Course on Educational Science for Teachers of Heath Professionals was held from 23rd February to 3rd March 2004. 21 participants including one each from Nepal and Bangladesh participated in the workshop. Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director, JIPMER inaugurated the function and stressed the need for setting up Medical Education Cell in each Institution to strengthen the Medical Education. The ten days programme was conducted as usual with active participation by all concerned. The workshop concluded with a valedictory function in which Dr. K.S. Reddy, Acting Dean, JIPMER delivered the valedictory address. Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, presided over the function and gave away the certificates to the participants. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor & Head of the Department of Medical Education read the course report. Dr. Mariette D’Souza, Professor of Skin & STD proposed the vote of thanks. All the 21 participants became life members of Alumni Association of NTTC.

Department of Physiology

1. Dr. Madan Mohan, Director-Professor & HOD attended the 12th International Yoga Festival conducted by the Tourism Department, Govt. of Pondicherry, from 4th to 7th January, 2004 and delivered an invited talk.

2. Dr. Madan Mohan also attended the Annual Conference of the Indian Academy of Yoga at (ICYER), Pondicherry International Centre for Yoga Education and Research, on 8th January, 2004 and delivered an invited talk.

3. The Department of Physiology organized a symposium on pulmonary function test under the auspices of the Association of Physiologist and Pharmacologist of India, Pondicherry Chapter, on Friday, 30th January, 2004. The programme was attended by the members of the A.P.P.I. (Association of Physiologist and Pharmacologist of India) of various medical and para medical institutes of Pondicherry. The programme was conducted as given below:

i. Welcome address and introduction of Pulmonary Function Test by Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Professor.

ii. Physiology of Pulmonary Mechanics – Dr. E.S. Prakash, III year postgraduate student.

iii. Physiology Basic of Pulmonary Function Test – Dr. Kaviraj Udupa, Senior Resident.

iv. Clinical Application of Pulmonary Function Test – Dr. K. Sundaralingam, Senior Resident, Department of Tuberculosis and Chest Diseases.

v. Dr. (Mrs.) Pravati Pal, Assistant Professor proposed vote of thanks.

Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology

1. Dr. Habeebullah, Professor & Head of the Department of Obst & Gyn and Officer-in-Charge, Human Reproduction Research Centre (ICMR) underwent training as Master Trainer for Implanon Insertion and Removal conducted at Jakarta, Indonesia from 17th to 18th February 2004.

2. Dr. Reena, Associate Professor, presented a paper on ‘Comparative study of extra amniotic 15-Methyl prostaglandin 12a and extra amniotic ethacridine lactate instillation for Mid Trimester Termination of pregnancy while Dr. (Mrs.) R. Gowri, Assistant Professor presented a paper on ‘Evaluation of transabdominal amnio-infusion in the Antepartum Management of Oligohydramnios complicating pre-term pregnancies’ in the 47th All India Obstetric & Gynaecological Congress held at Agra on 8.1.2004.

3. Mr. N.C. Saxena, Deputy Director General (Chief RHC), ICMR, New Delhi held discussions with the Head of the Department of Obst & Gyn & Officer-in-Charge of HRRC, Research Officers and other para medical staff in HRRC (Department of Obst & Gyn) JIPMER regarding research study on "MISOPROSTROL" proposed to be carried out on 26.1.2004. Further, a new research study on "IMPLANON" had also been discussed and approved.

4. Dr. Shahida Zaidi, President of Asia-Ocenia Federation of Obstetrics & Gynaecology gave a talk to the staff members of the Department of Obst & Gyn on "HYDROCEPHALUS" on 27.1.2004.

5. Dr. Phani Jyotsna, Junior Resident (PG IInd year) attended the "Third Shan Ratnam Update in Obstetrics & Gynaecology" organized by the Obstetric & Gynaecological Society of Southern India at Chennai on 24th and 25th January 2004.

6. As part of Intensified Pluse Polio Immunisation Drive, the Post Partum Programme in the Department of Obst & Gyn organized the 1st round of Immunisaiton on 4.1.2004 in its field areas by giving wide publicity. 485 babies were immunized against Polio in three booths. A total of 1678 houses were visited on the next day to ascertain that all the children were immunized and 15 children were further immunized. The second phase of Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation Drive was conducted by the Post Partum Programme, JIPMER on 22.2.2004. This was spread over 3 booths in which a total 770 children were immunized.

Department of Skin & STD

Dr. D.M. Thappa, Professor & Head; Dr. (Mrs) Mariette D’Souza, Professor and residents attended the 32nd National Conference of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists held at Hotel Renaissance, Mumbai, from 22-25 January, 2004

Dr. D.M. Thappa, delivered a Guest Lecture entitled: "Modifications of Pulse Therapy in Pemphigus". He, on his due election, was appointed as Vice-President of National Executive of Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists. He was also handed over the charge of Indian Journal of Paediatric Dermatology as its editor.

Dr.(Mrs) Mariette D’Souza, presented a paper on "Cutaneous genital tuberculosis". (Co-authors: Rashmi K, David P, Udaya S)

The following papers were presented by Senior and Junior Residents:

1. "The Seroprevalence of HSV I & II in patients attending STD Clinic" – presented by Shiva Swamy KN. Co-authors: DM Thappa & TJ Jaisankar.

2. "Hepatitis C Virus antibodies in patients with lichen planus: A case controlled study" presented by Dr. C. Udaya Shankar. Co-authors: Dr.(Mrs) Mariette D’Souza and S. Jayanthi.

3. "Unusual presentations of lepromatous leprosy & lepra reactions" – presented by Laxmisha Chandrasekar. Co-authors: DM Thappa, K Karthikeyan & Shriya Dave.

4. "Patterns of Adverse Cutaneous Reactions in a Tertiary Care Centre" – presented by: Dr. David P. Co-author: DM Thappa.

Department of Medicine

1. The following four faculty members of the Department of Medicine attended the Annual Conference of APICON 2004 held at Hyerabad from 1.1.2004 to 21.1.2004.

(i) Dr. T.K. Dutta, Professor of Medicine

(ii) Dr. Abdoul Hamide, Professor of Medicine

(iii) Dr. Aparna Agrawal, Professor of Medicine

(iv) Dr. R.K. Sahoo, Assistant Professor of Medicine

Dr. T.K. Dutta, Professor of Medicine, delivered a talk on "Evaluation of Short Stature" on 19.1.2004. He was awarded "FICP" by Indian College of Physicians on 20.1.2004.

Dr. Abdoul Hamide, Professor of Medicine presented a paper "Cardiac Manifestations in various stages of HIV disease" co-authored by Dr. Shyam, Dr. J. Balachander and Dr. Anil Kumar.

Dr. Aparna Agrawal, Professor of Medicine, attended the CME programme and presented a paper "VGI endoscopic evaluation in Chronic renal failure" in the Gastroenterology Section. It was co-authored by Sreepa G, Subrahmanyam DKS and Bala-soudarssanane.

2. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine was invited by the publishers of Davidsons Text Book of Medicine to interact with Dr. John Hunter, Chief Editor of the Book on 17.3.2004 at Chennai. He was among seven Senior Physicians called for from different part of the country to suggest improvements for the ensuing 20th Edition of the Clinical Text Book.

3. The Department of Medicine organized a Virtual Colloquium on "Therapeutic Challenges in Coronary Artery Disease" on 25.2.2004 at 3.30 PM in the Department seminar room. Dr. J. Balachander Head of the Department of Cardiology, was invited the Chair and to provide expert comments. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman moderated the session. The faculty members and Residents of the Medicine and Cardiology took active part in the Colloquium.

4. Dr. R.P. Swaminathan, Professor of Medicine, gave a talk on "Rational use of Antibiotics" in the Forum of Indian Medical Association on 15.2.2004. It was attended by DNB candidates postgraduate students and practitioners from Pondicherry. Various aspects regarding use of Antibiotics especially during pregnancy, prosthetic valve disease, Intra articular injections, intrathical medications were discussed in detail.

Department of Medical Records

Three staff members of JIPMER participated in the Medical Record Conference i.e., MEDRECON-2004 held at NIMHAN’s, Bangalore on 20th – 21st February, 2004.

Mrs. Mallika Kothandaraman, presented a paper on "Electronic Health Record – A paradigm Shift" and Mr. K. Sivanesan, presented a paper on "Electronic Health Record and Telemedicine" during the conference. The conference authorities presented a memento for the participants on this occasion. The staff learnt more about the latest developments and other computerization of medical record system which were very useful to them.

Department of Pharmacology

1. Dr. C. Adithan, Professor of Pharmacology delivered a Guest Lecture on "CYP2C9 and CYP2C19 pharmacogenomics in the South Indian Population" in the "Indo-Australian Conference on Biotechnology in Medical" held at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore during 9th – 11th February, 2004. Senior Resident- Dr. Poppy Rajan, Ph. D students and Research Scholars- Mr. A.T. Naveen, Ms. Rosemary Jose, Mr. R. Kesavan, Ms. Soya Sisy Sam and Ms. N. Padmaja and M.D. students – Dr. M. Ravindra Kumar, Dr. S. Subhashini and Dr. Vinod Thomas of the Department also attended the meeting. Ms. Rosemary presented a paper on "The Pharmacogenetics of CYP2C9 in the Karnataka population" and Mr. A.T. Naveen presented a paper on "Distribution of glutathione S-transferase M1 and T1 null genotypes in South India" in this meeting.

2. Professor C. Adithan, R. Raveendran and B. Gitanjali from the Department of Pharmacology were resource persons at a workshop organized by the Indian Council of Medical Research on "Biomedical communication". The wokshop was conducted on 25th – 26th February, 2004 at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Hubli. Over 50 participants, mainly faculty of KIMS and the neighboring medical and dental colleges had registered for the workshop. Various topics like the IMRAD structure, podium presentation, use of internet in publication, poster presentation and publication ethics were included.

Department of Plastic Surgery

Dr. Karoon Agrawal, Professor and Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery attended the 3rd Annual Meeting of Indian Society of Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies held at Chandigarh from 20-22nd February, 2004.

He delivered a lecture entitled "A modified protocol for surgical schedule in developing countries", during the pre-conference symposium on protocol of surgery.

He also chaired a scientific session on the subject of "Surgical camps for cleft children". During the conference Dr. Karoon Agrawal, presented the following papers:

1. Looking beyond the alveolar bone grafting.

2. Management of Detachment of Tongue Flap: A case report

3. Vomerine Flap in Palatoplasty Revisited.

Department of Emergency Medical Service

Dr. A. Thumbanathan, CMO (NFSG), Officer-in-Charge of E.M.S. Department participated in the 59th Annual Conference of Association of Physicians of India as Delegate held at Shilpakala Vedica – Shilparaman, Hyderabad from 18th – 21st January, 2004.

He also presented a paper entitled "Socio Economic Demographic Profile of Attempted Suicide Cases Attending E.M.S. Department of JIPMER" as poster presentation.

Department of Microbiology

Dr. S.C. Parija, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology organized a symposium on ‘Parasitic infections’ for Indian Association of Medical Microbiologists (AP Chapter) held in Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh from 6th – 8th February, 2004. He has also delivered a talk on ‘Simple methods in the Laboratory Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases’ during the meeting.

Department of Preventive and Social Medicine (Biometrics)

Dr. Ajit Sahai, Director-Professor of Biometrics, was invited to attend the Governing Council meeting as an Executive member on 26th February ’04, along with the main 31st Annual National Conference of Indian Association of Preventive and Social Medicine (IAPASM) at PGIMER, Chandigarh, between 27th and 29th February 2004. He chaired a session on "Epidemiology" and acted as a Judge in the poster presentations. Dr. Sahai was re-elected as an Executive member for 2004-05.

Department of Cardiology

1. Dr. Anil Kumar, Professor of Cardiology, gave a lecture on "Trials and Indication of Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy" on 21.2.2004 at a symposium on "Devices for heart failure" held at Coimbatore.

2. Dr. Anil Kumar also delivered a lecture an "Atrial fibrillation: Rate or Rhythm management" at a symposium on "Cardiac Rhythm Management" held by the Association of Physicians, Goa chapter, at Goa on the 29th of February, 2004.

Department of Pathology

Dr. Surendra Verma, Professor of Pathology attended the internation CME on Histopathology and Cytology hedl at Shri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute of Chennai, from 22nd to 24th January, 2004.
