Telemedicine Programme with G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair Satellite based Telemedicine and Video Conferencing facilities have been set up in JIPMER with assistance from Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). The first formal academic session was held on 2nd April 2004 with connectivity being established between JIPMER and G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair. Director Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao and Dr. Namita Ali, Director of Health Services Andaman and Nicobar Islands were the chief guests at each end. Faculty of JIPMER and the medical specialists of G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair participated in the programme. Dr. K.A. Narayan, Professor of P&SM and coordinator, Telemedicine welcomed the gathering. Dr. Namita Ali, in her introductory remarks, described the health infrastructure of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. She highlighted the achievements made by the health sector. Dr. Namita Ali, expressed the hope that JIPMER would assist in the quality enhancement of the Medical and Health Professional of the Islands. Telemedicine would be an important medium to achieve this goal. She stated that the Andaman & Nicobar administration had a programme of inviting specialists for training their doctors and hoped that the faculty of JIPMER would visit the island. Dr. K.S.V.K. Subba Rao, Director JIPMER, briefly mentioned the development of telemedicine of JIPMER and acknowledged the help given by ISRO in setting up the facility. He noted that now there was a qualitative improvement in the audio and video. He hoped that in the near future the process of communication, especially with medical images would be easy and seamless. Dr. Subba Rao mentioned that the strength of JIPMER was in quality education and hoped that useful collaboration could be established between institutions for knowledge enhancement, which would then be reflected in improved patient care. The inauguration was followed by an academic session. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Head of Departments of Medicine and Medical education introduced the topic "Current concepts in treatment of Angina". Dr. J. Balachandar, Professor and Head of Cardiology then made a lucid presentation on the topic. This was followed by a very intensive discussion between the specialists of the two hospitals, with queries being raised by Dr. S.S. Singh, Medical Specialist, G.B. Pant Hospital, Port Blair, and Prof. Balachandar answering them. The programme has set the pace for academic exchange between institutions. It is envisaged that regular academic activities, initially on a weekly basis, will be carried out between institutions. 1. The monthly meeting of March, 2004 was held on the 29 th at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. Three papers were presented. Dr. Sandipan Pati from Blood Bank, Department of Pathology, presented a paper entitled: "Study of blood/blood component utilization pattern for various clinical situations in JIPMER". Dr. Ashitha Bose from the Department of Surgery, presented a case report entitled "Spontaneous antegrade enteral migration of a feeding jejunostomy tube". Dr. R. Venkateswara Rao from the Department of TB and Chest Diseases, presented a case report on allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis. The meeting was chaired by Professor of Medicine & President of JSS- Dr. T.K. Dutta. The secretary, Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal, Professor of Physiology, proposed the vote of thanks.2. The monthly meeting of April, 2004was held on the 15 th at 3.15 PM in Pasteur Theatre. Three papers were presented. Dr. Sandipan Pati, from Blood Bank (Department of Pathology), presented a paper entitled: "Retrospective audit of fresh frozen plasma usage in a tertiary hospital in India". Two students presented the results of their ICMR studentship work. Prasath P. from the Department of Physiology presented a paper entitled: "Effects of injection of histamine into nucleus caudatus on food and water intake in albino rats" and Saseendar from the Department of Pathology presented a study entitled: "Analysis of dietary pattern among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy".th April 2004 in Pasteur Theater. Professor T.K. Dutta presided over the meeting. At the outset, Dr. Dutta welcomed the Guest Orator, Dr. S.C. Mahapatra, Additional Professor of Physiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. The guest orator was introduced by Dr. Gopal Krushna Pal. Dr. Mahapatra delivered the oration on the topic "Nutritional management of diabetes mellitus", which was highly appreciated by the audience. He was presented a memento by Director of JIPMER, Dr. KS.V.K. Subba Rao, and the Scroll of Honour by Dr. T.K. Dutta, president JSS. Dr. Mahapatra also distributed prizes to the winners of awards for papers presented in the JSS during the year 2003-04. Dr. Vishnu Bhat, Professor of Pedatrics, won the awards for the best original research paper. Dr. E.S. Prakash, Senior Resident in Department of Physiology won the award for the best case report. Mr. Saseendar, VI Semester MBBS student won the award for the best ICMR studentship project. The annual dinner of the JSS was held in the same evening at JIPMER guest house. Department of Microbiology 1. Dr. S.C. Parija, Professor and Head, Department of Microbiology received Dr. S.R. Rao Momerial Oration Award for the year 2003 instituted by Bombay Veterinary College Alumni Association in recognition of his contributions to the study and development of zoonotic parasitic diseases. Professor Parija delivered the 11 th Dr. S.R. Rao Memorial Oration on 1.3.2004 at Bombay Veterinary College on ‘Recent development in the diagnosis and epidemiology of cystic echinococcos is in India’.2. Dr. Parija was the Resource Scientist for the 8 th National Training Programme on ‘Immunology of Parasitic Diseases’ conducted at Veterinary College, Hebbal, Bangalore from 8 to 28th March 2004. Professor Parija conducted a session and delivered a talk on ‘Laboratory diagnosis of cystic echinococcosis: recent developments’ on 20.3.2004.3. Dr. Parija was also invited as an Expert to attend the 2 days Regional Training workshop for External Quality Assurance Scheme (EQAS) organized to strengthen the State Reference Laboratories for HIV. This workshop was organized by the National AIDS Control Organization, New Delhi at Chennai on 15 th and 16th March 2004. Prof. Parija gave a talk on "Filling up of reports, analysis of test, errors and risk management". Prof. Parija also presented the review of 3rd phase of EQAS which was conducted in the Department of Microbiology, JIPMER from 5-7 March 2003.4. Dr. Parija also attended the National Conference of the National Academy of Medical Sciences held at Jaipur from 9-11 April, 2004. Dr. Parija received the scroll of Fellowship of National Academy of Medical Sciences during the conference. He was conferred this fellowship in the year 2001. 5. Dr. B.N. Harish, Professor of Microbiology was invited as an expert for WHO-SEAR workshop on ‘Evaluation of diagnostic kits for leptospirosis’ held at DRDO, Gwalior, from 23-25 March, 2004. Department of Skin & STD 1. Dr. D.M. Thappa, Professor and Head and Dr. T.J. Jaishankar, Associate Professor along with five postgraduates of this department attended the 1 st National Workshop on Phototherapy, Photocon 2004, held on 10th and 11th April 2004 at Gnanajothi Audiotorium, Palace Road, Bangalore. Dr. D.M. Thappa chaired two scientific Sessions.2. Dr. Thappa also attended a Workshop on Research on "Sexually Transmitted and Reproductive tract Infections in India: Sharing experience and expertise" which was held at Hotel Kenilworth, Goa from 17 – 20 th April, 2004.3. A CME Programme for Postgraduates (DERMIS 2004) was held at Sri. Ramachandra Medical College, on 22 nd and 23rd April 2004 at Porur, Chennai. Dr. Thappa and five Postgraduates attended the above programme. Dr. Thappa gave a Guest Lecture on STD’s in HIV scenario. A quiz was organized by Dr. Laxmisha, Senior Resident. JIPMER Postgraduate team of Dr. Senthil Kumar and Dr. Anand Kumar Dubey got the first prize.Department of Medicine 1. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman, Director-Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine was invited by the publishers of Davidsons Text Book of Medicine to interact with Dr. John Hunter, Chief Editor of the book on 17.3.2004 at Chennai. He was among 7 senior Physicians called from different parts of the Country to suggest improvements for the ensuing 20 th Edition of the Clinical Text Book.2. Dr. K.R. Sethuraman has been nominated as Expert Member, Board of Studies of Indra Prastha University, Delhi with effect from February 2004. 3. Dr. Sethuraman has also been nominated as Member of Board of Studies, Annamalai University, with effect from April 2004. Department of Anatomy Prof. M. Batmanabane, Head of the Department of Anatomy gave an invited lecture entitled "Ultrastructure of Normal Myocardium" at the International Update on Heart Failure held at Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute, Chennai, on the 19 th & 20th of March 2004. This update was organized by the Tamil Nadu Chapter of the Cardiological Soociety of India in collaboration with the University of Miami School of Medicine, USA.Department of Cardiology 1. Dr. R. Anil Kumar, Professor of Cardiology, delivered a key note lecture on "Recent Advances in the management of Hypertension" at the monthly meeting of the Indian Medical Association (Pondicherry Chapter) held at Ananda Inn on the 14 th of March, 2004. This was chaired by Prof. Balachander, Head of Department of Cardiology, JIPMER.th – 21st March, 2004. He gave a lecture on "Drug treatment of Paroxysmal atrial fibrillaction" during the conference.
