SPANDAN

Spandan 2003, the annual JIPMER Intercollegiate Sports and Cultural competition was held from 2nd to 6th September, 2003. This saw the participation of 32 colleges from all parts of India. Over 1000 delegates took part in various literary, debating, cultural events and games. Les litterrairs 2003 witnessed events like What is the Good Word?, Dumb Charades, 90 seconds, Just a minute, Extempore & Debate. The debate was on ‘The concept of God is redundant in today’s scientific world’. All events had good participation and were enjoyed by one and all. JIPMER retained the overall trophy for the literary events.

The cultural events held in the evenings in Lister square covered a wide panorama of items from Indian music to fashion show to various minor stage events. The events often went on till late in the night and kept everyone enthralled, with the excellent sound and lighting providing a suitable backdrop. The overall trophy for cultural was won by Madras Christian College which beat Christian College, Bangalore to the top spot with impressive performances in the musical events.

Les Jeux, the games section, saw increased participation in all the events. The host team reached the finals of volleyball, basketball and hockey, but unfortunately lost out to their opponents. St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore, won hockey, Christian Medical College, Vellore, retained its grip on volleyball and first timers Kolar Medical College, made an impressive debut winning the basketball trophy. Overall, SPANDAN 2003 saw enthusiastic participation from all quarters. The delegates went back home a satisfied lot, vowing to return next year.

HINDI FORTNIGHT CELEBRATIONS

The Town Official Language Implementation Committee (TOLIC) of Pondicherry sponsored Hindi Fortnight Celebrations was held at JIPMER, Pondicherry from 1st September to 15th September 2003.

The various programmes and competitions in Hindi were organized during the period, and a good number of staff from the member offices and children from various schools, colleges and the Pondicherry University participated in these programmes. The details of the competition are as follows:

The Valedictory Function of this celebration was held on 25th September 2003 at JIPMER, Pondicherry. Speaking on this occasion the Chief Guest, Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao who was also the Chairman, Town Official Language Implementation Committee, Pondicherry, appreciated the activities of TOLIC. Dr. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent and Dr. K. Sathyanarayana Reddy, Dean spoke on the occasion. Dr. Manohar Kant Srivastava, Chief Medical Officer (O.S.D), JIPMER and Secretary, Town Official Language Implementation Committee presented the annual report and also presented the report about the activities of the Town Offical Language Implementation Committee, Pondicherry. Certificate of participation to all the participants and prizes to the winners of respective competitions were awarded by the Chief Guest. Shri P. Anand Raj, Assistant Director, National Archives of India, Pondicherry proposed vote of thanks. Then the function came to an end with the National Anthem.

HINDI DIWAS

Hindi Diwas was celebrated, as usual on 15th September, 2003. Various competitions in Hindi were organized for the staff members in connection with this during the week.

A Valedictory Function was held on 25.9.2003 at 3.30 P.M. in the Hunter Theatre. Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao, was the Chief Guest. Dr. S. Badrinath, and Dr. K. Sathyanarayana Reddy, spoke on the occasion. Dr. Manohar Kant Srivastava, Vice-Chairman, JIPMER Official Language Implementation Committee (JOLIC) presented the report of activities of the JIPMER Official Language Implementation Committee. A prize distribution ceremony was also held on this occasion. Winners of respective competitions and staff who did their work in Hindi on that day were awarded prizes along with the participation certificates.

WORKSHOP ON MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES FOR NURSING ADMINISTRATORS

The workshop on Management Techniques for Nursing Administrators was held from 1.9.2003 to 10.9.2003 at JIPMER Hospital. The Inauguration was held on 1.9.2003 at 11 A.M. in the NTTC Seminar Hall, JIPMER. Mrs. G. David, Chief Nursing Officer and the Course Co-ordinator welcomed the gatherings. Dr. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent, presided over the function. He in his presidential address, pointed out that the main objective of this programme is to train the senior Nursing staff as an efficient Hospital/Ward Managers. Thirty one participants from Govt. General Hospital Pondicherry, Govt. Head Quarters Hospitals, Cuddalore, Villupuram and Thiruvannamalai and JIPMER attended the workshop.

Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao, Director, in his address stressed the importance of updating the management techniques. He pointed out that administration and management hand in hand. All the participants actively took part in the proceedings & benefitted from the workshop.

On 10.9.2003, the valedictory function was held in the NTTC Seminar Hall. Dr. Mohan Rao, Additional Medical Supdt, presided over the function. He pointed out that an efficient manager working in the Govt. Sector can challenge the managers working in the private sector by proper utilization of available resources.

Dr. Reddy, Dean, delivered the valedictory address. He pointed out that Nursing staffs are working in a team and therefore, to achieve the objectives of good management, good co-operation, co-ordination and communication is essential. Certificates were distributed to the participants. Mr. Ramesh, Nursing Tutor, proposed the vote of thanks.

47th NATIONAL COURSE ON EDUCATIONAL SCIENCE FOR TEACHERS OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

The 47th National Course on Educational Science for teachers of Health Professionals was held in its modified form from 21th - 27th September 2003 in the NTTC Seminar Hall. 24 participants from 12 Medical Colleges and Railway Hospital, Chennai took part.

The workshop began on Sunday the 21st September 2003 evening. The day's program ended with the Director’s Dinner for the participants where the participants and the resource persons got to know each other quite well. From Monday, the serious sessions started.

The core-group of NTTC faculty conducted the workshop by applying the Adult Learning Practice in full. This was highly appreciated by the participants. The pre-test score which was 50; raised to a Post-test score of 71. The course ended on Saturday (27.9.2003) noon with the valedictory function, which was presided over by Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao. He delivered the valedictory address and distributed certificates to the participants.

JIPMER SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY

  1. A guest lecture was delivered on 19th September 2003 by Dr. (Mrs.) Uma Chandrasekaran, Senior Lecturer, School of Management, Pondicherry University, on the topic: "Determinants of Service Quality of a Teaching Government Hospital". The topic was part of her Phd. thesis work, which was carried out in JIPMER with Dr. R. Sambasiva Rao as one of the supervisors. The study highlighted various positive and negative aspects regarding the functioning of a government hospital like JIPMER. The meeting was attended by a large number of doctors & staff. Suggestions were also made for the improvement of patient care policies in JIPMER. The meeting was chaired by the President of JSS, Dr. T.K. Dutta.

  2. The second monthly meeting of the session 2003-2004 was held on 29th September 2003, Monday at 3.15 P.M. in Pasteur Theatre. Three papers were presented from the departments of Cardiology, Medicine & Physiology. Dr. Santhosh Satheesh, Department of Cardiology, presented a paper entitled "Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia in Three Siblings: Three-year followup and family screening", Dr. Vinod Venugopal, Department of Medicine presented a paper entitled "A clinicohematological profile of arterial thrombosis in the young" and Dr. Kannan N, Department of Physiology presented a paper on "Effects of injection of serotonin into nucleus caudatus on food and water intake and body weight in albino rats".

STAFF NEWS

Medical Superintendent

Dr. S. Badrinath, Medical Superintendent, participated as Chief Guest in the Valedictory function of the Hospital Infection Control Week celebrated by the Christian Medical College & Hospital, Vellore, on 6.9.2003.

Dr. S. Badrinath as President-Indian Association of Medical Microbiology (IAMM), participated in the meeting of the National Task Force on Laboratory containment of wild polioviruses held at the ICMR Headquarter, New Delhi on 19th September, 2003. Laboratory containment of wild polioviruses is critical to the success of the Polio Eradication initiative. The first step in the pre global eradication phase involves setting up of National Task Force to coordinate all phase of containment. Accordingly, the Government of India, Ministry of Health & FW has set up the National Task Force and the President of the IAMM has been nominated as a member of the Task Force.

Department of Surgery

  1. Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan, Director-Professor & Head, Department of Surgery attended the 42nd Annual Conference of the National Academy of Medical Sciences held at Indore, M.P. on 6th and 7th September, 2003. He delivered the prestigious Dr. K.L. WIG Oration on the subject of "Postgraduate Surgical Education-Rushing Headlong towards Dystopia".

  2. The XIII National Conference of Indian Association of Surgical Gastroenterology was held from 18th to 21st September, 2003 at Bhopal. Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan, Dr. Dinker Pai, Dr. Vikram Kate & Residents of the department attended the conference. Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan delivered the Veerabhai Oration for Past Presidents and spoke on "Helicobacter Pylori and peptic ulcer dyspepsia-have we heard the last word? He also chaired the best paper award session and guest lecture on "Management of corrosive injury to oesophagus. Dr. Ananthakrishnan was also an expert in "Meet the Professor" Session on Oesophageal diseases. Dr. Vikam Kate delivered a guest lecture in the CME and spoke on "What’s new in: Upper G.I. Surgery". He delivered a guest lecture on "Enterocutaneous fistulae" in the conference. He was also an expert in a "Meet the Professor Session" for upper G.I. diseases. Dr. Kate chaired the guest lecture on "How to manage a difficult abdomen?".

Two of the papers presented from JIPMER were selected for special mention and were awarded certificates of appreciation. These were:

  1. Treatment of anal fissures with the combination of lignocaine and minoxidil: A prospective randomized double-blind trial. Muthukumarassamy R, Robinson Smile s, Raveendran R, Sarath Chandra Sistla.

  2. Factors contributing to small intestinal suture line disruption - a prospective study. Amit Nair, Dinker Pai, Jagdish S.

Department of Ophthalmology

Dr. Vasudev Anand Rao, Professor & Head of the Department of Ophthalmology, was invited as Guest Faculty for the XIII Annual Conference of the Glaucoma Society of India at Tirunelveli on 20th & 21st September 2003. He attended the conference & delivered the following lectures:

1. Pseudo Exfoliation Glaucoma.

2. Recent advances in the management of Neovascular Glaucoma.

Department of Plastic Surgery

1. Dr. Karoon Agrawal, Professor & Head of Plastic Surgery attended the XIII Congress of International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery held at Sydney, Australia from 10-15th August 2003 and presented the following papers:

i. Role of Methyl methacrylate pressure clip therapy in the management of Ear Lobe Keloid: Long Term Results.

ii. Human Bites: Not an uncommon clinical entity.

iii. Fire Cracker Injuries of the Hand - an Epidemiological study.

iv. Vomerine Flap in Palatoplasty Revisited (Poster).

v. An innovative management of detachment of Palatal Mucoperiosteal Flag from the hard palate (Poster).

vi. A new vaginoplasty mould (Poster).

2.Dr. Karoon Agrawal, also attended the Pre-Conference Workshop on 8th and 9th September 2003 at Ganga Hospital, Coimbatore and the 38th Annual Conference of Association of Plastic Surgeons of India held from 10 to 13th September 2003 at Ooty. The following papers were presented from the department.

1. Modification in mouth gag tongue blade to prevent endotracheal tube compression.

2. Human bites: Not an Uncommon Clinical entity.

Dr. Agrawal also chaired a session on Cleft Lip and Palate.

Department of Anatomy

Dr. M. Batmanabane, Professor & Head of Anatomy, Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao, Professor of Anatomy, Dr. Keerti Singh and Dr. N. Muthukumaravel, Senior Residents, Dr. S. Anand, P.G. Student, and Mr. B. Rajesh Phd., Scholar from the department participated in the XXVIth Annual Conference of the Association of Anatomists, Tamilnadu and CME held in Aarupadai Veedu Medical College, Kirumambakkam, Pondicherry on 13th and 14th September 2003 and presented scientific papers. The best paper awards were given to the following papers:

  1. An unusual branching pattern of axillary artery. Dr. Keerti Singh, Dr. M. Batmanabane and Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao.

  2. Cytogenetic studies in infants with congenital malformations. Dr. N. Muthukumaravel, Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao and Dr. Vishnu Bhat.

  3. Acephalus Acardiac Foetus – A Case Report. Sri. B. Rajesh, Dr. Sudha Rao, Dr. B. Mahadevan and Dr. B. Vishnu Bhat.

  4. Craniofacial anthropometry in Down’s syndrome. Dr S. Anand, Dr. Prakash Chand, Dr. K. Ramachandra Rao and Dr. Vishnu Bhat.

Mr. B. Rajesh, PhD., Scholar, received a cash award of Rs. 750/- for the best dissertation work under the category of postgraduates, offered by the Association of Anatomists Tamilnadu in the inaugural session of the conference.

Department of Neurology

Dr. Sunil K. Narayan, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Neurology attended the Annual Conference of Indian Academy of Neurology (IANCON 2003) at Vishakapatnam from 28.9.2003 to 30.9.2003 and presented the following papers:

1. The usefulness of tilt table test in episodic unexplained loss of consciousness.

2. Clinico-electrophysiological variants and prognostic profile of Guillain-barre syndrome in Pondicherry.

He also co-chaired a session on cerebrovascular diseases.

Department of Medicine

Dr. Sharat Ahluwalia, Consultant Neurologist, USA and JIPMER Aluminums (MBBS 1982 batch and MD General Medicine 1989 batch) visited JIPMER on 29th September, 2003 and delivered a guest lecture on "Epilepsy and sleep-the connection". The talk was chaired by Prof. T.K. Dutta and Prof. R.P. Swaminathan and was attended by postgraduates of various departments.

Department of Pharmacology

Dr.C.Adithan, Dr.B.Gitanjali, Dr.R.Raveendran (Professors of Pharmacology), Dr.Ravindra Kumar, Dr.Tushar Tewari (PG Students), Mr.Naveen, Ms Rose Mary (PhD Students), Ms Padmaja, Ms Sissy Sam Soya (Research Associates), attended the Southern Regional Conference of Indian Pharmocologists-2003 at S.V.Medical College,Tirupati from 12th-14th September, 2003.

Dr. Adithan, Dr. Gitanjali, Dr. Raveendran, Dr.Ajit Sahai (Professor of Biometrics, JIPMER) and PG Students conducted a preconference workshop on "Elementary Biomedical Statistics for Pharmacologists" on 12th September. The workshop was attended by 60 PG students and young faculty members from various colleges.

Dr. Adithan and Dr. Gitanjali co-ordinated a symposium. Dr. Gitanajli gave a lecture on "New Look at P.G Curriculum" and Dr. Adithan talked on "Pharmocogenomics" during the symposium.

All the PG students, Ph.D students and Research Associates presented papers at the conference.

Department of Pediatrics

Dr. B. Vishnu Bhat, Professor of Pediatrics and Dr. Adhisivam, Senior Resident in Pediatrics attended the 28th Annual Indian Academy of Pediatrics(IAP)-Tamilnadu State Conference (IAP-TNSE) & 17th South Zone IAP conference at Christian Medical College, Vellore from 4th-6th September 2003. Dr. Vishnu Bhat delivered a guest lecture entitled "Management of Preterm and Low birth weight babies at Peripheral level". Dr. Adhisivam presented a paper entitled "Cardio vascular Malformations associated with Urinary tract anomalies". Dr. Vishnu Bhat was also judge for the award of best paper.

The 6th Divisional rounds of National Neonatology Forum quiz for Post graduates was held at JIPMER on 8th September 2003. Ten Postgraduates from five medical colleges participated. Dr. Srinivasan, Director-Professor and Head of Department of Pediatrics addressed the meeting. Dr. Vishnu Bhat and his team conducted the quiz program. Dr. Basavaraj and Dr. Sreedhar Raju, Pediatric post graduates of JIPMER, won the first prize. Dr. Sambasiva Rao, gave the prizes. Dr. N. Ananthakrishnan, Director-Proessor of Surgry and Acting Medical Superintendent, distributed the certificates.
