JIPMER ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
SECRETARY’S REPORT August 3rd, 2003
Dear friends,
At the outset let me welcome all of you for the Annual Meet 2003. One way or the other, we have had a fairly busy year. One great problem we have had to face deals with the DJ Reddy Memorial Rest House. As you might be aware, this rest house was constructed with donations from the alumni on land donated generously by our present President, Dr Janardhanan. A caretaker was appointed to look after the day to day running of the place. Unfortunately, in his absence one day some miscreants bypassed the electric meter and framed the association by complaining to the electricity department. The department personnel held discussions with office bearers of the association and demanded a sum of Rs 1 lakh approx. as outstanding dues and fines. This sum was subsequently reduced to Rs 50000. The association refused to pay this sum, as we were innocent of electricity theft. An FIR was lodged against Dr Danabalan, whose name appears in the electricity bill, as he was secretary of the association when the electricity connection was obtained. Dr Danabalan obtained anticipatory bail with the help of the association, for which a sum of Rs 10000 has been incurred in the form of lawyer’s fees and other expenditure. Now the department is demanding an advance payment of Rs 20000 to review the matter. The executive committee is in discussion with the electricity department and requests the permission of the GB to proceed further in this matter.
Going on to more pleasant matters, the Dr KS Sridhar memorial prize for best outgoing graduate of JIPMER has been instituted by the alumni. This prize was renamed based on the decisions taken in the last GB meeting. The alumni association has also paid Rs 30000 to the Pondicherry University to institute Dr S Choudhary Memorial Prize for best undergraduate student in the subject of Surgery. This prize will be formally instituted when approved by the University Senate. The association places on record our thanks for the anonymous donor who donated Rs 20000 towards instituting this prize. The association paid the remainder of the money. Some other donations during the year were: USD100 by Dr Amit Kumar Ghosh, Rs 2000 by Dr Ravindra, Rs 84000 by Dr Chandrashekhar Modur, who has suggested that the sum be used in any way we see fit. The Batch of 67 has pledged to donate Rs 50000 for the purchase of a computer system for the association. They have also donated educational software for the JIPMER Library. The alumni association thanks these donors wholeheartedly.
As you are aware, the association has instituted a number of prizes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The winners of the various prizes donated by the Association for 2003 are:
The Annual Alumni Oration of the JIPMER Scientific Society was delivered on 27th February 2003 by Dr K R Balakrishnan (Batch of 1971) on “Role of mathematical modelling. An engineering tool to understand cardiac structure and function- a clinician’s perspective.”
If you remember, it was decided in the last meeting to revive the Intern’s tea party to appraise the interns about the association and to encourage them to join. It was also decided to do this exercise with the first year postgraduates as well. Consequently two tea parties were held in 2003 but I regret to say that the response has been very poor, to say the least.
Two important achievements of the association in the year under review are
The executive committee has also succeeded in enrolling a record number of new members during this year.
The Batch of 56 and 57 are planning to meet at JIPMER in January 2004. The association has promised them all assistance for this meet. Preparations for this meet are well under way.
Last year, the silver jubilee batch ie the batch of 77 decided to meet in December instead of in August as it was more convenient for them. We had a discussion in our GB as well with regard to the timing of the annual meet and the consensus of opinion was that our annual meet should continue to be held in the first weekend of August. This year, the batch of 78 is the silver jubilee batch. This batch was a truncated batch with an intake of only 30 odd students that year. There are only 6 or 7 students of that batch here at present and therefore they have not been able to organize their silver jubilee meet. However, the batch members who are here have actively participated in the meet, both today and in the scientific session. I also have pleasure in announcing that today’s dinner has been sponsored by that batch, which is a new precedent. The association thanks the batch for this generous gesture.
As was decided in the GB meeting last year, if the members agree we will pass a hat around for voluntary donations to meet the expenses of this year’s meet. I once again appeal to all members to update your addresses with us, especially email addresses. Many of the emails I send out bounce back, making it difficult to communicate with the members.
The executive committee has decided to hold fresh elections this year for the various posts of the association. We have already sounded some of our members we feel will be suitable for the job. However, if anybody else wishes to stand for any of the posts, you are welcome to do so during the elections. I take this opportunity to place on record my heartfelt thanks to members of the outgoing executive who have helped me enthusiastically in my work. I especially thank our President Dr Janardhanan for his continuous support throughout the two years of our tenure. I apologize for any shortcomings that might have occurred during our tenure.
I once again welcome you all for this year’s meet and hope you have a pleasant time in our alma mater.
Dinker Pai
Secretary
