2.  No. of Post-graduate admission per year:

     M.D. - 6

3.  Highlights of patient care provided:

§         A state of art Critical Care Unit, with advanced microprocessor controlled ventilators, invasive and non-invasive haemodynamic monitoring systems, respiratory gas monitoring systems, blood gas analyser, central monitoring and computerised patient data entry system is available. Provide round the clock CCU services with sophisticated ventilatory therapy for all patients referred from Pondicherry and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu. It is the only unit in the government sector south of Chennai providing this service totally free of cost for poor patients.

4.  Special equipments available:

5.  Major research activities:

v      Small dose Fentanyl – Optimal time of adminstration to attenuate the Cardiovascular response to Laryngoscopy and Endotracheal intubation.

v      Addition of ketamine or neostigmine to bupivacaine induced spinal anaesthesia – Effect of quality and duration of analgesia.

v      Predicting difficult intubation with indirect laryngoscopy.

v      Intraoperative blood salvage and autotransfusion, study of its effect on haemotological parameters and coagulation profile.

v      Effect of preoperative incentive spirometry on postoperative lung function in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

v      Comparison of oral ketamine and midazolam as premedicant in pediatric patients – A randomized prospective double blind study.

v      Determination of the minimum alveolar concentration of sevoflurane with and without nitrous oxide for tracheal intubation in paediatric patients.

v      Anaesthetic management of benign lesions of larynx – Retrospective & prospective study.

v      Conscious sedation with propofol for surgeries under spinal anaesthesia:  Anaesthesiologist controlled verus patient controlled.

v      Comparison of intubating laryngeal masks airway with direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation – a randomized prospective study.

v      Comparison of combitube and laryngeal mask airway for airway – maintenance during anaesthesia.

v      Comparison of the intrathecal fentanyl bupivacaine Vs. bupivacaine for spinal anaesthesia in caesarian section.

6. ONGOING RESEARCH PROJECTS:

  1. A comparison of Propofol versus Sevoflurane for Laryngeal Mask Airway insertion in Paediatric Surgery patients
  2. Association   of MDR-1 Genotype Polymorphism with Morphine requirement for patient controlled Analgesia after total abdominal Hysterectomy
  3. Pre-oxygenation in patients with difficult mask ventilation
  4. Comparison of low dose Bupivacaine with Fentanyl and Bupivacaine alone for spinal Anaesthesia for lower limb and perineal surgeries.
  5. Comparative evaluation of Propofol - Ketamine  and Propofol – Fentanyl for LMA insertion
  6. Assessment of vocal cord function after thyroid surgery
  7. Effect of positioning from supine and left lateral to m150 lateral tilt on maternal blood flow velocities and wave forms in full term pregnant women
  8. Comparison of automated jet ventilation with assisted spontaneous ventilation in rigid bronchoscopy for tracheobronchial foreign body in children
  9. Penile vs caudal block in children undergoing hypospadias urethroplasty
  10. Evaluation of clonidine as additive to bupivacaine for central neuraxial blockade
  11. Comparison of single dose diclofenac sodium vs paracetamol suppository for pain relief following inguinal surgery in children
  12. Effect of nitrous oxide on endotracheal tube intracuff pressure
