3.  Highlights of patient care provided:

• The department has specialised anaesthesia care for cardiothoracic surgery, pediatric surgery, neonatal surgeries, plastic surgery, urology and interventional cardiac procedures.

§         A state of art Critical Care Unit, with advanced microprocessor controlled ventilators, invasive and non-invasive haemodynamic monitoring systems, respiratory gas monitoring systems, blood gas analyser, central monitoring and computerised patient data entry system is available. Provide round the clock CCU services with sophisticated ventilatory therapy for all patients referred from Pondicherry and adjoining areas of Tamil Nadu. It is the only unit in the government sector south of Chennai providing this service totally free of cost for poor patients.

• Chronic pain relief services with neurolytic blocks under flouroscopic guidance is provided routinely.
• Flexible fibreoptic laryngoscopy is being routinely performed for all cases of difficult intubation.
• Acute pain relief is provided for obstetric and postoperative patients on an on-demand basis, with continuous epidural analgesia, and/ or patient controlled analgesia.
• Intraoperative cell salvage is done in cases where major blood loss is expected.

4.  Special equipments available:

• Twelve operation theatres function daily, and all are equipped with complete anaesthesia machines with Ohmeda 7000 ventilator, Ohmeda RGM (respiratory gas monitors), pulse oximeters and haemodynamic monitoring system. The Cardiothoracic OT is specially equipped with an Excel 210 anaesthesia workstation.
• The CCU has Puritan Bennett 7200 microprocessor based ventilators at each bedside, along with respiratory gas monitoring and invasive haemodynamic monitoring system with facility to monitor cardiac output.
• Two flexible fibreoptic laryngoscopes for use in theatres for difficult airway and for diagnostic and therapeutic use in the CCU.
• Cell-Saver: for use in OT for intraoperative blood salvage.
• 2 Oxygen concentrators for providing oxygen to the entire hospital.
• Neuromuscular transmission monitors available in all theatres.
• CPR training using BLS and ALS mannequins. Medical students and paramedics are trained
• Emergency medical services. equipped with emergency cum transport ventilators, pulse oximeters and all resuscitation equipment including defibrillators.

5.  Major research activities:

v      Small dose Fentanyl – Optimal time of adminstration to attenuate the Cardiovascular response to Laryngoscopy and Endotracheal intubation.

v      Addition of ketamine or neostigmine to bupivacaine induced spinal anaesthesia – Effect of quality and duration of analgesia.

v      Predicting difficult intubation with indirect laryngoscopy.

v      Intraoperative blood salvage and autotransfusion, study of its effect on haemotological parameters and coagulation profile.

v      Effect of preoperative incentive spirometry on postoperative lung function in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

v      Comparison of oral ketamine and midazolam as premedicant in pediatric patients – A randomized prospective double blind study.

v      Determination of the minimum alveolar concentration of sevoflurane with and without nitrous oxide for tracheal intubation in paediatric patients.

v      Anaesthetic management of benign lesions of larynx – Retrospective & prospective study.

v      Conscious sedation with propofol for surgeries under spinal anaesthesia:  Anaesthesiologist controlled verus patient controlled.

v      Comparison of intubating laryngeal masks airway with direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation – a randomized prospective study.

v      Comparison of combitube and laryngeal mask airway for airway – maintenance during anaesthesia.

v      Comparison of the intrathecal fentanyl bupivacaine Vs. bupivacaine for spinal anaesthesia in caesarian section.
