The Government of India has initiated the National Pharmacovigilance Programme. The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) is coordinating this country-wide programme. It has established 2 zonal centres, 5 regional centres and 28 peripheral centres for monitoring Adverse Drug Reaction (ADR) in India.

Regional Pharmacovigilance Centre, JIPMER, Pondicherry monitors the ADR reported from South Indian states. Eight peripheral  centres   viz, Annamalai Nagar, Bangalore, Coimbatore, Kochi, Kolar, Manipal, Mysore and Ooty are attached  to this centre.

The overall objectives of this programme are :

  • To monitor the safety of the drugs and provide structured inputs  for appropriate regulatory interventions.

  • To create awareness about ADR monitoring in India .

We solicit the cooperation of healthcare professionals in collecting data of adverse events related to drugs marketed in India. They can report all suspected adverse reaction to drugs and other medicinal substances including herbal, traditional or alternative remedies. The reporting of seemingly insignificant or common adverse reactions would be important since it may highlight a wide spread prescribing problem.
