III. Algorithmic approach in management of common hematologic malignancies in Indian setting (case studies):

SECTION-1:

Malignancies to be covered: 

  1. Non Hodgkin’s Lymphoma – Emphasis on DLBCL and Follicular lymphoma – Dr. Auro Viswabandya, CMC, Vellore – 9.00 – 9.35 am
  2. Hodgkin’s lymphoma – Dr. Pankaj Malhotra, PGIMER, Chandigarh – 9.35 – 10.10 am
  3. Multiple Myeloma – Dr. Ajay Sharma, R & R Hospital, Delhi – 10.10  - 10.45 am

 

TEA / COFFEE BREAK – 10.45 – 11.00 AM 

  1. Myeloproliferative diseases (CML, Polycythaemia Vera, Essential Thrombocythaemia and Myelofibrosis) – Dr. Joseph John, CMC, Ludhiana – 11.00 – 11.35 am
  2. Chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and Hairy cell Leukaemia – Dr. Sharat Damodar, Narayan Hridalaya, Bangalore – 11.35 – 12.10 pm

 

These 5 to be discussed in details as even a general practitioner can treat the uncomplicated cases and patients can have a regular follow up at local place without much sophisticated investigations (once diagnosis is confirmed). 

35 minutes discussion on each which will include  

    1. How do they commonly present
    2. How to diagnose / investigate them
    3. What complications they can be associated with
    4. How to treat them upfront
    5. How to treat them when there is a relapse / progressive disease

 

A. This will be a case based discussion with interactive sessions.

B. The discussion will be mainly through power point presentation

C. There should be take home message along with algorithm after each presentation. 
 
 

 

SECTION -2: 

TIME: 15 x 2 = 30 minutes – 12.10 – 12.40 pm 

Other malignancies to be discussed (in brief as these are protocol based and have to be ideally treated in an institution / centers where facilities are available) 

  1. Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia – Paediatric and Adult –Dr. Sashi Apte, Sahyadri Speciality Hospital, Pune
  2. Acute Myeloid Leukaemia –Paediatric and Adult – Dr. Sashi Apte, Sahyadri Speciality Hospital, Pune

 

The main discussion will be

      1. How do they commonly present
      2. How to diagnose / investigate them
      3. What complications they can be associated with
      4. How to treat them upfront
      5. How to treat them when there is a relapse / progressive disease

 

  1. These diseases will not be discussed in detail but a broad overview of their management will be given. The main emphasis here is the diagnosis and then subsequent referral to a centre where they can be appropriately treated.

 There should be take home message along with an algorithm after each presentation.
