JIPMER hospital provides most modern allopathic treatment for all diseases and disorders and has modern sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic facilities that are provided free of costs to patients. The hospital outpatient department attracts more than 4000 patients daily not only from Pondicherry but also from surrounding states.(nearby states of Tamilnadu, Andhra, Karnataka and Kerala). The inpatient departments have 860 beds distributed among various medical, surgical and super specialities. It has one of the best organised Medical Records Department in the country. Other auxiliary departments like Central Sterile Supplies Department (CSSD), Kitchen, Laundry & Central Workshop etc. provide support services to the hospital.
The hospital is equipped with whole body CT scan and a number of ultrasound equipment for noninvasive imaging, high pressure liquid chromatography, automated cell counter, autoanalysers for biochemical parameters and blood gas analyzer, etc. for diagnostic support. The blood bank works round the clock and ensures that each unit of blood that issued is tested for AIDS and Hepatitis-B viruses. Medical, surgical and respiratory critical intensive care units provide excellent critical care services for cases of heart attack, poisoning, stroke, etc. The present casualty services unit is being upgraded as a separate emergency services department with all modern critical care equipments to be installed in New Casualty Block.
The operation theatre complex consists of 10 operating suits that are equipped with the most modern anaesthetic equipments and monitors. The super speciality departments like Cardiothoracic surgery, Urology and Plastic surgery provide quality care for open heart surgery for replacement of valves, by pass of coronary arteries and genitourinary surgery etc. using latest equipments and modern endoscope & laser techniques. A Burn unit and Breast Cancer screening & Surgical Gastroenterology clinics; Video Laproscopic surgery and Nasal Endoscopic Sinus surgery services were added in recent past. The Orthopaedic centre houses modern facilities with physiotherapy and occupational therapy units. Cobalt teletherapy unit and brachytherapy unit are available in the department of Radiotherapy. Department of Cardiology is equipped with a sophisticated Cardiac Cath Laboratory and specializing in non-surgical management of heart diseases. It is emerging as number one centre for implantation of pace makers.
The institute is also involved in all centrally sponsored national health programs like Family planning, Leprosy Eradication, Malaria control, Prevention of Blindness, ICDS, Control of AIDS, Expanded program of immunization. The department of Psychiatry is recognized as one of the five national drug de-addiction centres in the country. The department of Microbiology is recognized as a centre for sero-surveillance of HIV infections and viral hepatitis. AFP surveillance is conducted by department of Paediatrics which is also equipped with a Neonatology unit. The department of Pharmacology runs one of the six adverse drug reaction monitoring centres in the country and recently a sleep laboratory has been set up to study sleep disorders. The satellite rural and urban health centres act as centres for reorientation and training of medical students. Mobile health clinics under ROME scheme are rendering useful services to remote villages.

Duty Doctor is available on call in Anesthesia, Radiology, Plastic Surgery, Ophthalmology, ENT and in other specialities.
Consultants in Medicine, Surgery, Orthopedics Surgery, Obst. & Gynecology and other specialities are available on call.
Emergency cases are attended promptly.
Emergency operation theatre is maintained on a regular basis to ensure that it is usable at all times.
Free telephone is available at the entrance of the Casualty for patients and their attendants.

Charges for various tests are available with Sister-in-charge of wards. For poor patients, these charges can be fully waived off by the Medical Superintendent.
If any major/essential equipment is out of order, information regarding the same is displayed.
Visitors to in-patients will be allowed between 4:45 pm and 6:45 pm. Patients whose condition need attendants to help them will be issued a pass.
Miscellaneous Facilities
Wheel Chairs and stretchers are available on request a the gate of OPD & Casualty for the facility of patients who are not in a position to walk.
Lifts are available for access to higher floors.
There is a standby generator to cater to emergency services in case of breakdown of electricity.
Public Telephone Booths are available at various locations in the hospitals.
Adequate drinking water and toilet facilities are available.
A chemist shop (Amudasurabi) is located in the hospital premises which is open from 9 AM to 6 PM all days.
The hospital has a rest room for those OPD patients who require to come again next day. There is no separate place for attendants.
There is a cloak room facility for the patients to keep their own clothes, etc. Hospital provides linen to wear for all admitted patients.
Patient Library and TV facilities are available for in-patients.
Complaints and Grievances
There will be occasions when our services will not be up to your expectations. Please do not hesitate to register your complaint. It will only help us serve you better. There is a designated medical officer whose name and location is displayed in the hospital for attending to all grievances. The Deputy Medical Superintendent is the Grievance Officer.
Every grievance will be duly acknowledged.
We aim to settle your genuine complaints within 10 working days of its receipt. If we cannot, we will explain the reasons and the time we will take to resolve.
A public grievance committee exists in DGHS on issues which are not resolved within the hospital.
