3. Highlights of patient care provided:
§ Provides patient care in the divisions of Histopathology, Cytology and Hematology. There is a central laboratory service for out patients. In addition clinical post mortems are carried out.
§ On an average, 18,000 samples are processed in the histopathology section annually.
§ Frozen section and immunohistochemistry are routinely done. In the division of cytology, fine needle aspirations, fluid cytology and cervical smears are the main investigations done with an annual average of 15,000. Workup of anemia, leukemia, hemolytic disorders, bleeding and coagulation disorders are carried out in hematology division. Approximately 12,000 investigations are performed per year. More than 500 bone marrow aspirations and biopsies are done annually. In addition, emergency 24 hour services are provided for screening for malarial parasites and for work up of disseminated intravascular coagulation.
§ A modernized blood bank carries out regular screening of blood for Hepatitis B and C and HIV and ensures supply of safe blood to patients. Whole blood and blood components like packed cells, platelet concentrates, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitates are provided to patients. Regular blood donation camps are organized both within the institute and outside.
