3. Highlights of patient care provided :
Drug Monitoring Service: The blood levels of the following drugs and hormones are measured:
Phenobarbitone, phenytoin, carbamazepine, theophylline, digoxin, paracetamol, salicylic acid, VMA, cortisol, FSH, LH, testosterone, oestradiol, progesterone and prolactin.
Quality control of drugs: Measurement of drug levels in pharmaceutical formulation such as tablets, injections etc., are being done as and when required.
Sleep disorders laboratory: The sleep disorders laboratory renders diagnostic services to the hospital by performing all night ploysomnagraphic studies, multiple sleep latency tests and titration of conitnuous positive airways pressure. Patients with sleep disorders such as insomnia are counselled and those with sleep apnea, narcolepsy, REM sleep disorder etc., are advised appropriate therapy.

Thermocycler, Gel documentation system, horizontal and vertical electrophoresis, deep freezer, HPLC, spectrophotometer, spectroflourimeter, multiwell gamma counter, Sleep polysomnography.
5. Major research activities:
v Genetic polymorphism of drug metabolizing enzymes in South Indian population (Indo-French research project).
v Ethnic variations in the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of alprazolam (funded by the University Grants Commission).
v Effect of yoga based therapy in chronic insomnia (funded by the Central Council for Research in Yoga & Naturopathy).
v Effect of honey on drug metabolizing enzymes in the rabbits.
v Relative efficacy of prokinetic in gastro-intestinal inertia caused by morphine.
v Anti ulcer effect of lithium.
v Effect of oduvanthalai extract on isolated ileum preparation of guinea pig.
v Effect of intracerebroventicular (ICV) administration of insulin on small intestinal transit on mice.
v Prokinetic drugs on gastric emptying time and small intestinal transit.
v Pharmacoeconomic study of NSAIDS.
6. Other notable achievements/contribution to health sciences:
§ A “Pharmacogenomics” laboratory, for the first time in South India, has been established under Technical colloboration with INSERM, Paris, France
§ Editorial office of Indian Journal of Pharmacology continues in the department for the 13th successive year.
§ Organised ICMR sponsored workshop on “Bio-medical communication in the Cyberage” August 23rd to 25th, 2001.
§ Publishing a “Drug Information Bulletin” since November 2000.
